I am an elderly amateur photographer in Long Beach, Ca. with health problems limiting my
ability to do photography. Do you know a local firm that buys used equipment? I would like to sell as a lot and also avoid shipping. Am looking for both convenience and a fair price for my stuff

You may want to check some local camera “swap meets”. I remembered very well that a rep from KEH opened a booth there and bought used camera gear. I am not sure whether that is still continuing until now. But for sure there are some local B/S vendors that frequent that kind of shows are willing to buy your gear. Keep in mind though that they do this with the intention of reselling and as such, they don’t pay that much but you are able to sell all your gear right there and then and get cash for it.

Samy's In Los Angeles buys used photo gear. I've never dealt with them so I can't say how fair they pay, but they are probably about as local as you'll find.

I feel like you would make the most money by listing everything in the buy and sell farm here and just offer everything as a package for a "local only" sale. There’s plenty of members that live in Southern California that would be willing to meet up in person to make a deal especially since you have history here buying/selling.

Theres a camera show in Pasadena . Local sellers/buyers set up to buy,sell and trade used ge ar . If interested, i can pass on details. I have a friend in Phoenix t hat goes sometimes.

Although not local, you might try http://mpb.com. You can list all of your gear on their web site and get an immediate quote. If you decide you like the price, they will pay the shipping from you to them. I have dealt with them a couple of times over the past couple of years and their prices are "reasonable" given that they relieve you of all the hassle of going to swap meets, listing on other sites, doing all the shipping, insurance, paperwork, etc. They communicate very well and keep you apprised as to the progress of receipt, evaluation and payment to your bank account.

But I would post a local-sales only thread here and see what you can sell beforehand. You can try Craig's List and Facebook, too, if you've got the stomach to deal with a lot of lowball offers and whining.
