The Alabama Hills National Scenic Area is frosted over with fresh snow, which has fallen all the way down to the valley floor. From these lower foothills to the crest of the Sierra Nevada high above, the world has been painted white. The scenic pyramid of Lone Pine Peak is high in the center of frame at 12,949 feet. To its right masked in precipitous clouds Mount Whitney is hidden, while to the left the 14,026 foot summit of Mount Langley looms behind. I’ve always been fascinated by the color contrast between the warm brown of the Alabama Hills granite and the cool grey of the Sierra Nevada granite that is its kin. Geologically it is all part of the same block of granite known as a batholith. The rare top to bottom snowfall really was spectacular to behold.
