p.5 #1 · Buyer Beware! Peak Design Travel Tripod

I hate to keep this nonsense going but for some reason others have turned it into a five page long ?

I am a Sony so I posted it on the forum I use and have bookmarked right or wrong.

I posted it to inform others who may or may not be aware of kickstarter or Peak Designs policy on this tripod nothing more nothing less.

I was trying to be helpful and for reasons only other posters can figure out (I have my own ideas) people decide they need to add there two cents when it does add anything positive

Since I've never participated in a kickstarter project, I had no idea that those projects don't offer returns. It's good to know this information. Thank you for pointing it out.

I don't believe amounts paid for a Kickstarter project are subject to sales tax. It's considered a capital contribution, I believe, not a purchase. That's also presumably why the items can't be returned. It's not considered a purchase. I think they call it a "gift" or something like that, which you get when you make a kickstarter (capital) contribution.

Well maybe if you paid attention, you would notice I did not start this thread. You would also notice that it has gone off-track and members are posting comments that have nothing to do with Sony. Once it reaches that point, it is an open forum.

Goes to prove that the OP should not have posted on this forum in the first place, eh?

I have 14 more years on these forums than you have, so I have seen it happen a few more times than you have.

So what you saying is your 14 years has earned you "forum cred"? Your allowed to clutter things up just others are not I guess

"How about because it is a forum specifically for the discussion of Sony gear, not for a heads up for every sort of problem that people run into every day. It just adds clutter to this forum."

Don't blame the old guy, the OP should have posted in the General Gear forum with the other PD trashing threads.

I am surprised Fred has not moved the thread.

I've used my 70-200 & A9 on PD carbon tripod numerous time and I have never had the Plate ever come loose. I put a drop of blue Loctite on it on to prevent things like that from ever happening I personally think the tripod is very sturdy

My preference is not to have anything that I have to screw on bolt on or mess with or worry about coming loose. I do not want to have to install a square anchor on every camera body I own or lens foot either. There is nothing about that which makes any sense when most people just use a RRS or equivilent dovetail base on their bodies and a dovetail lens foot.

When every single lens foot and camera body quickly lock in to my Arca Swiss and RRS heads on my monopods and all my tripods it would be rediculous to introduce another part that must be used on every body and lens I want to use it on and end up with a situation that is not nearly as secure as the normal way of doing it. Makes no sense?

The dovetail base on camera bases and lens feet is three times as long and sturdier and I feel far more at ease knowing the clamping force is there and do not have to apply loctite or other to help keep it tight because there is nothing to loosen up or worry about.

I am used to RRS TFC34's and TVC44 and Gitzo series 2 travelers which are two and three times the price but I want something substantial holding my gear that I can swap cameras and lenses quickly and easily.

I do not think the PD is prime time personally but I am sure it will work for some. But if they are using more conventional arca swiss mounts which are the standard of the industry very few would choose to switch to something like PD is offering, I mean why would they there is no benefit and lots of downsides.

I personally put blue Locktite on most screws since it just ensures it doesn't back out on me. I have used the caprture clip an have never had it slip, out but to each his own

I thought the PD head that comes with the Travel Tripod was Arca-Swiss compatible? One needs to remove the two small pins from the head in order to use any A-S compatible plate/L-bracket (which are only used to prevent PD’s square capture plate from sliding out the side, as well as quickly centering the PD capture plate).

At least that’s my understanding after watching the video demonstration/instructions.

Note that humans are much more perceptive of density than actual weight. This is why the PD tripod feels heavy in hand when folded up and lightweight when fully set up. At 2.75 lbs the PD tripod is certainly not on the ultralight end of the range, but is very light when compared against tripods of similar height.

I'd encourage you not to be rash, but try the tripod out for awhile. It's different, so it's alien at the start. As I use it more, I'm LOVING it.

And dimensions. I think it's BA that has no max. weight (stated) on hand luggage (at least on its European flights). Maybe Easyjet has something like 32kgs too. I forget exactly, I fly with too many airlines to remember the details . No loyalty - just a price whore

I usually travel with 30-32" long luggage and keep each to 23kg or less.
Of course I would never have reason to use a tripod in the cabin of an aircraft.

That’s correct. Just unscrew the pins with the tool attached to the tripod and you’re good to go with the plate(s) of your choice.

Twist, click, insert and twist to lock. Going to portrait is a breeze with an L plate.

So my RRS plate fits on the PD tripod in both Vertical & Horizontal orientations without removing those two screws.

Great, I use RRS L-Barckets as well and plan on adding a panning clamp to the tripod when needed.

I was confused by trstahly’s post that made it sound like the PD head was not A-S compaible.

Thanks for this! I automatically took those screws off but my L Bracket works with the screws on as well! Mine is the Gabale.

It is A-S compatible with pins removed...that's how my a7riv is sitting on it right now Edited to add: Good news, I'm going to try it with the RRS.

Maybe we could start a review thread for the tripod....not for Peak Design....or anything else....just the tripod?

I've just set it up in the house and played with each camera on it. I like the extra height from my current travel kit and it feels sturdier - especially after I weight it. The tripod leaves with me on a trip in two days and will get actual in the wild use, so I will report back
