p.1 #1 · At the Coffee Shop

Earlier this year I began a personal project focusing on the culture of the local coffee shop. Over the years I have tended to hang out in the various ones where I live as kind of an "office away from the office" and have grown to love the people and environment.

Recently I asked a barista at one of the places I frequent here in Kenai if I could do some shots of her while she worked. Selena is a very sweet young lady who was very willing to oblige my request.

Most of my photo pursuits have been of the portrait variety and thus I grabbed my 85mm 1.4D out of habit rather than being conscious of the documentary style project I had planned. As a result many of the pictures have more of a portraiture feel to them rather than a "story-telling" style. Next time I will go a little wider and do a better job of capturing the atmosphere as I intended. I did take along my 50mm 1.4D on a whim and ended using it for a couple shots.

Of course comments and critiques are welcome.

Wonderful shots. I think b&w would do the project more justice.-- maybe even coffee colored sepia .

I think it would be a mistake to go wider. These are already environmental portraits.

Here's a few more. I really enjoyed shooting these although it stretched my comfort level a bit because of the public nature of the setting.

1) This one was shot with the 50mm.

reshott #1 with her chin clearing the counter ("Welcome")

shoot another with her hands & maybe face making a latte, etc.

Does she open? Close the shop? Pics of her in front of the outer wall, opening, night shots, etc.

Is she Athabaskan? If so, you could expand from the coffee shop to her heritage.

I assume she gets copies of all these...

She has been given copies of the entire set. The shot by the welcome sign was not a planned shot or I would’ve shot it with the 50 at a smaller aperture. The candid nature of it definitely had some limitations. I think I will try and re-take that shot when I am in next time. I like the idea of more detailed shots of her hands doing the various tasks. Good thoughts, thanks!

I re-imagined this one in B&W. I think I like it a bit better than the color version.
