p.1 #1 · Utah Fall Color Study - 2004 - Large Format

It's crazy to think that I made these images 15 years ago this week in southern Utah. What a great week it was having a get together with the likes of Guy Tal, Michael Gordon, Adam Gibbs, Steve Weaver Tony Kuyper and a few others I forget...

All of these images were shot with a Shen-Hao 4x5 field camera and various lenses on Fuji Velvia 100f film.

Thanks for looking and let me know what you think!

Cottonwood Tree in Glan Canyon - Shen-Hao 4x5 and a Nikkor-M 300mm f9

Leaves and Ice - Zion NP - Shen-Hao 4x5, Nikkor-W 150mm f5.6

Cottonwood in a keeper hole - Glen Canyon - Shen-Hao 4x5, Nikkor-W f5.6

Gulch Reflections - Glen Canyon - Shen-Hao 4x5, Schneider 75mm f5.6 I think...

Great idea for a set/theme. I especially like the first two images.

Thank you! Those two are still some of my favorites I've taken over the years.

Wow all great shots and if I had to, I would pick the first as my fave.

Good looking set, with the first two being my faves. What's a 4x5? Ha ha. Just kidding. I grew up (photographically) shooting on large format.

I still miss it... Every once in a while I go on Ebay and price 4x5 kits out...

All wonderful images, the last being my favorite. How did you work the exposure to not blow out the highlights?

Good old film!!! Fuji was good stuff. I used to use Kodachrome 24 and loved it! I spoke to a woman who runs the photo development desk at a local photo store and she said that Kodak is back in business and trying to manufacturer a lot of their older films, including Kodachrome 24. The only problem with some of them like Kodachrome is that they used a lot of really BAD chemicals that were very polluting and are illegal to use today. So they're trying to substitute those chemicals for less poisonous ones that are legal.

Really nice colors Ken.

Thank you! I don't completely remember but I'm pretty sure it was all reflected light from the walls above so it was fairly consistent except for the far wall which had to be toned down in Photoshop.

These images were all scanned on a drum scanner as well.

I may be selling my Arca Swiss Discovery 4x5 kit and a couple of lenses soon. Haven’t used the 4x5 in 7 years, but man does 4x5 Velvia rock! Love the images by the way. Great eye!

These are wondrous images. The subtle colors in the first two lift my spirits! Those leaves are like works of art unto themselves.

It's interesting that "analog" photography appears to have some of the same advantages that vinyl records have over digital media (not trying to stir any pots here!), even when converted to a digital format.
