The Dolomites is a photographer's paradise. One of the best things is that it is also a great destination for Wives and Family. You can do it as elegantly or as rough as you like. Most people don't know, but there are more Michelin Rated Chefs in the Dolomites than anywhere else in Italy. Or, you can hike and camp in the Rifugios.
I would advise an early October time frame. Weather is great, and the crowds are gone. In fact at towards the end of October many things shut down until the ski season starts. Timing is important here I think.
