If we compare to the 7D2:

Joystick of the 7D2
Burst rate of the 7D2
Same high ISO as the 7D2
More low ISO DR than that 7D2
More resolution than the 7D2, by quite a bit
UHS-II card slot vs 7D2 UHS-I, but single slot
Tilt/Touch LCD
Twice the battery life of the 7D2
1/16000 electronic shutter speed
4K video vs HD on the 7D2
Bluetooth/Wifi/GPS vs none on the 7D2

So yes, the 80D had some of this, but this is why I fail to see a 7D3. It would have the 65 pt AF system, but then what to differentiate it much more than the 80D for that price delta?

Best possible AF focus acquisition / tracking performance like the 1D series (just in a crop body)
Buffer
Could go with less MP (say the same 26 as the 80D), and more FPS (say 14-16).

Superior AF (maybe more than 65 pt, also)
14 FPS
Buffer
Dual Digic 8
Dual Card Slot

I think that would be worth an extra dollar or two for a 7D3 vs. 90D

Especially, if it is going to be the last of the Mohican's (DSLR).
I'm still thinking that the 2020 games will see the 7D3. If not then ... then likely never ... rather the 7R.
I suspect that Canon has one more iteration to release before really driving the (developing glass) R mount.

As mentioned by another poster you must turn off everything. Lens correction is on by default and doesn't help anyone shooting RAW. I was out today with my 90D and believe I am getting 9fps in servo. This camera is great, with real tracking unlike many croppers in the past.

Lens correction?
What and where on the camera?
My quick and dirty test got 7 fps while tracking cars on freeway.

Thanks.

Nice looking shots and furbabies!

8 of of 10 sounds pretty good! I'm assuming this was using the OVF?

Have you tried shooting cRaw's to see if that helps the buffer?

Thanks, yes it was the OVF. I have not tried the cRaw yet, I will and see if there is a difference. I hate the lens too

7 FPS when you need it most (tracking) seems a bit short of the mark to consider it equal to the 7Dx

Being the best iteration of many previous croppers ... there are a lot of croppers that are not the 7Dx for it to compare to. I think this is certainly the best consumer grade performer to date (90D), but I think there is another level of performance yet to be released in Canon croppers.

Give the 90D 5-6 months in the market, then we see a price drop and the announcement of the 7D3 just in time for the 2020's. Tracking at 14 fps vs. tracking at 7 fps ... hmmm, that might have additional value for some folks.

Speculative of course, but ...

I think it's strange that after a week there is still no definitive answer on the fps. Some are saying 7 max no matter how you configure the settings and others are saying and tested it at 10. I don't recall this ever being dragged out like this with any other camera, has it?

As for a future 7D3, I suspect the rumors were true in that they were going to combine the lines between the XXD & XD with the 90D release. There will be no 7D3 DSLR anywhere down the road.

However... I strongly suspect there will be a 7R in the very near future that will likely dwarf the 90D's capabilities. Classic Canon move as Kent has previously pointed out.
This will be to "hands-on" testing grounds for the future 1R flagship. That 1R monster will likely have stacked sensors with dual digic 8 or 9's hitting 18-20 fps at full 14 bit. Unlike the A9 that drops to 12 fps @ 14 bit.

There is no way Canon would not offer both FF 83mp and a cropper 32.5mp sensor in the EOS-R series. It's coming soon.

Yes, yes I know. My cup is half full, but it's not Kool aid.

Looks like step #14 according to this write-up.

The thread I linked in my original post has additional comment from a couple of 90D users that comment they are achieving the specified 10 FPS.

The devil is in the details. Seems like all camera makers play games with asterisks when it comes to FPS. Sony is notorious for it.

Canon's own 90D page has to have a chart with all the combos to keep it straight.

I was able to reach 10 fps shooting in manual focus after turning off other things that were suggested.
Just read the article and did what the author suggested. Thanks again for the article.
Just trying to get the max out of the camera quickly, as I'm shooting the 49ers vs Steelers game, and I
wanted to compare the results vs 1DX. Part of my reason for buying the camera was essentially to get the
same effect as tele-converter without using one.
400mm with 1.4 tele vs 400mm with 1.6 crop camera.

I'm still waiting for my 1dmkv ("H" sensor), so will a 7dmkiii materialize? Your guess is as good as mine.

I'm with you on the 1D V ("H") ... but, I figure the odds on an APS-H is about .0001%, whereas the 7D3 is about 33%, imo.

It's not difficult to reach 10FPS. Some users and/or their cameras are misconfigured.

EBH, have you verified OVF 10 fps with AI Servo and a moving subject? The reports on this seem still to be all over the place. Any special setting constraints we should be aware of? Thanks.

If there was going to be a 7D3, then I suspect that Canon would have released that first already to capture the high end of the market, and then the 90D half a year later as a scaled down and cheaper version. So my guess is, this is it. Well as long as the AF of the 90D is up there, I'd actually be fine with this turn of events and may get one. I had a 80D before and loved it, it was a super-nice light-weight complement to my 5D3 for travel and family use. I had hoped it would also double for BIF, giving me some extra reach over the 5D3, but the AF didn't cut it for that. If the 90D AF is at least as good as the 5D3 for tracking birds, then it will be great. And who knows, it may be the last model of that line with a mirror.

Ah dunno, when the 70D hit the market, the 7D2 followed it, not the other way around. So mayhaps a 7 series niche model is nigh, albeit it might not be a DSLR or have a 7 moniker.

I don't shoott BIF but the 90D certainly does a much better job at nailing exposure for reds and oranges than the 70D, 80D and 7D I owned before it. I had to underexpose to keep reds from blowing out with the earlier designs.

My point is that Canon proceeds on their plans, not necessarily what users want. When I owned the 1dmkiv, like others I was speculating on the next 1d "H" body though it never came. Instead, they moved to FF providing no real increase in resolution and for those of us who shoot sports/wildlife a bit of a disadvantage. Whereas, I was able to obviate the tc or use a more responsive and less penalizing 1.4x tc, with the switch to FF, my optics were forced. FWIW, I'd jump over the moon for a high resolution "H" sensor (or perhaps a really high resolution, can you say 83 MP FF which can shoot in crop mode).

The fate of the 7dmkiii is speculative.

Concur.

+1 @ the desire for a high res "split the diff" H 1.3x size. That could be a single body back to my 1D II / N days, rather than switching off between 1 vs. 1.6x.

Just one sensor size for everything would be convenient for you, but for Canon it would mean maintaining three lines of camera bodies spaced rather close together in sensor size.
