Not sure there it covers more than what has already been stated but Mark Galer has a pretty good video about efcs and bokeh.

I watched this the other day, and overall it's an excellent video as usual for him, except I couldn't help but twitch when he says around 19:00 that he prefers the EFCS-on bokeh... suddenly pictured him as Woody with a string being pulled on his back.

Bokeh is subjective. I prefer EFSC being off in most cases, but depends on subject as well. So I typically shoot everything in electronic mode except flash and LED lighting

It really depends on the camera, settings, and how fast you and your subject move. Shooting in APS-C/crop mode seems to speed up readout as well as continuous/burst modes. A7s readout is 1/30s, which is on the higher end of most FE cameras besides the A9 (which is 1/160s). Here are some tested speeds I found from Jim Kasson's blog:

a9: 1/160s (FF)
a7RII: 1/14s (FF) to 1/20s (APS-C)
a7RIII: 1/15s (FF) to 1/30s (continuous)
a7S 1/30s (FF) to 1/50s (APS-C)

Personally, I use the A7rII and definitely have noticed rolling shutter distortion when just shooting people/kids in silent shutter.

Manny does a good job explaining the impact on the bokeh here:

Meh, it's not game changing and can help reduce shutter shock, especially on the high megapixel bodies, as well as it only applying to certain shutter speeds. How often are you shooting portraits over 1/1000?

'How often are you shooting portraits over 1/1000?'

Much of the time, like so many other travel shooters working in fluky/strong light. It's also a bane for anyone working with rapid light changes, indoors and outdoors transitions. Many don't have time to attend to these idiosyncracies, looking for the last 1% extra. The wider the range of what you shoot, the more conservative you tend to be.

Agree, it's hard to manage even if you're aware of the issues. I tend to leave EFCS on all the time just because the cost of forgetting is lower. Forget to turn off EFCS and you get some funky bokeh at really high speeds. If you use mechanical shutter all the time and forget to turn on EFCS in shutter shock range, you can end up with blurry/ruined images altogether.

Sony need to implement a shutter setting like Nikon. In the Z6/7 they have a shutter type setting that you can set to Auto where the camera will use EFCS at 1/250s and below only, and mechanical above that. What a concept!

This would be ideal, yes!

Yeah, it's pretty inconvenient for sure, especially because currently there is no way to assign EFCS ON/OFF to any custom key (why Sony why?).

For me it's bothering enough that I ended sacrifice a full custom slot to the mode dials to it: 1 - EFCS ON, 2 - EFCS OFF when I use big aperture lenses in harsh lighting conditions. It still happens that sometimes forget to switch between the two, but at least it's a quick way without having to delve into the menus.

P.S. I wasn't aware that the A7III could had shutter shock issues with the mechanical shutter

I just put it in My Menu, and during a wedding or shoot I rarely ever leave that page if I ever need to go into the menus. It's readily available and just two button presses, which imo is plenty fast.

Pretty much every MILC has shutter shock issues with their fully-mechanical shutters. The problem on MILCs is the second physical curtain has to be closed prior to the start of the exposure, since the first curtain starts opened to support full-time Live View. This doesn't occur on DSLRs (outside of LV) since their curtains are already closed at the start of an exposure. The vibration of closing that second mechanical curtain before the start of exposure resonates well into the actual exposure, causing blur at affected shutter speeds, typically worst around 1/60.

The bokeh in that image he referred to reminds me of the Otus bokeh, which is my favorite. More structure = more perceived DoF = more context, kinda like how film grain seemingly smooths out focus plane transitions and also provides more perceived structure.

But I think regarding bokeh and EFCS...I see it as another tool you can use to modify elements of your image and not as a negative (though an automatic function option would be nice like the Nikons).

I lost count how many times I emailed and talked to Sony Pro services about giving us an automatic setup speed for this or a way to assign to a button but nothing. Now I have it on My Menu and leave it off all the time on my R3 and only change if I need to do some action shooting with the R3 (which will normally mean I will use the A9 instead)).

I had a need to shoot SS the other day of detailed material (not mono colour walls), under those clusters of LEDs, on a7rII, shutter speeds 1/15s - 1/60s. Not home but close inspection in EVF image review looks to be OK. I read some Jim Kasson and got the distinct impression it is something that happens all the time with SS, due to the cycles of the lamps - he mentioned eight bands. I'll post when I process.

Yes, it has to do with the frequency that the LED "pulses" light out. It's why you don't use SS with artificial lights in general if you can help it.

A couple of images of 15C art, shot under LED clusters (only light source apart from very dim skylight) - ISO 4000, with Silent Shutter. No EFCS - which in retrospect I should have used. These had to be done in stealth mode. My one-handed focus then shoot from the hip technique meant these had to be straightened severely .. where is the banding?

AC powered LEDs at 60hz? And you shoot at 1/60.
