These were a blast to shoot...so nice when one's subject poses for all the time you need unlike our regular avian friends who take flight at a sideways glance
Great set all around.

Thanks Geoff! Yes, it was a breath of fresh air wasn't it? I wish I had a macro lens.

You have some really sweet shots here Colin ~ Ron
Thanks Ron!
These are from last Saturday & Sunday. The first day I took my D850 and 500 f/4E with 1.4 extender, but the Minimum Focus Distance of 11' didn't work very well for such tiny subjects, so the next day I took the 7DII with 100-400II. Your mission - should you accept it - is to figure out which images belong to which camera.

Great job, Colin! Love your selective focusing and compositions!
Thanks!
When using the 7DII and 100-400II, it was difficult to get acceptable images given the enormously shallow DOF shooting at 400mm, wide open and at or near the MFD. I went to the location briefly again today and tried stopping down (sometimes quite a bit), and backing off a bit so I wasn't right at the MFD borderline, but I still had many images that I had to toss. It seemed like the focusing was off, but I checked the AFMA after, and it's bang-on. I don't get it, that lens is capable of tack-sharp images.
Perhaps Geoff is right, maybe I need to get a Sony - .

A fine performance of using negative space and lines with a tiny subject that steals the show
You earned my vote Colin, would love to see what you do with a macro lens

Thanks Karl. When I switched from Canon to Nikon about 6 months ago, I sold my Tamron 90mm macro, now I wish I had it!
As forum member "technic" has pointed out, the Canon 100-400II - while a stellar lens - is not very good at close-ups. You just don't get that critical sharpness that the lens delivers otherwise.
If you are having DOF issues with an APS-C sensor you will have bigger issues with a FF sensor - you will lose another stop of DOF. It's good to see that you are trying improve on the shots you already got. If I may say so, some of the images are a little too bright or hot, and could use a little more clarity and contrast to make them pop. I am being nitpicky here.
