As far as rear slot ND filters, Aurora will likely release their magnetic system in March.
Since their other products, like the AMF filters are severely delayed due to the Corona virus I'm pretty sure we won't see production samples in March, maybe not even in April. But prototypes of the new magnetic system will likely be available.

There is a rumour about a Sony 12-24/2.8 GM coming this summer.
But the Sony would have to be as good as the Sigma in terms of sharpness, CA, coma, flare, and color (imo). And all that without being much larger or heavier, or being outrageously expensive. Perhaps not impossible, but a big ask.
My guess is that it will fail to meet at least one of these crieteria, in which case it wouldn't displace the Sigma for me.

It will beat the Sigma at 12mm and 13mm.
Sure, but those are unusual focal lengths required only for very rare situatons. If the Sony falls short of the Sigma in their overlapping range, I suspect it will in the long run (i.e. after the hype subsides) fail to address the challenge Sigma have presented with their remarkable DN zoom.

It will be interesting to see when and if the Sony lens shows up.

Well it’s gotta have to be stellar and reasonable priced but something to be said about 12mm too. Will see.
Really the biggest issue is usually somewhere in the range their is a weak focal length. Sony 12-24 which I loved was weak at 24 so I had to cover 24mm somewhere else . The Sigma at least mine at 24mm matched or beat the Sony 24 1.4. So outside speed I found I did not need the 24 1.4. More importwas just seeing my tests at every focal length on Big Bronco how outstanding this lens really is . The only and I mean only downside was two focal lengths at 2.8 needed F4 in the corners. That’s just flat out incredible. Sure love to see a 12-24 2.8 from Sony but proof is in the pudding

The Sigma 14-24/2.8 is quite compact and light for what it is optically. A Sony 12-24/2.8 matching the Sigma's IQ will be way bigger and expensive. I'm curious to see what Sony can do though.

I tested a copy of the Sigma 24-70 and is was a great zoom, comparable to the Sony 24-70 GM but I didn't think it was outstanding like their 14-24/2.8 (which performs as good or better than most primes).
For your work needs, I think you will be happy with it Guy.

What do you like for the 24-70 range Fred if you had to go with a zoom?

Just got this from Aurora:
"There is a very serious delay due to the coronavirus. The whole country was practically locked down for a month and the life is not back to normal yet from what we learn.
The CNC shop is just re-opened last week but they don’t have enough operators.
I hope we will have something ready to test in mid-March."

Thanks!

Designing zoom lenses going from wide angle to telephoto is more challenging and I think the Sigma is just as good as the Sony GM while costing much less.
It's just not a prime-killer like their 14-24mm f/2.8 Art but still an excellent normal zoom.

As a side note: the Nisi S5 cap is well worth the $....that plus the 100mm rear cap from Amazon, and I can easily slide the whole setup in the front pocket of my shoulder bag, making it trivial to pop onto the lens when i need it.

Jordan,
I agree with that as well. I purchased the NiSi lens cap a few weeks ago and it works very well. I have taken the Sigma 14-24 out with the Nisi S5 on the lens with the lens cap covering the CPL stowed in my bag and ready to go. I have also been able to keep the Nisi S5 setup on the Sigma 14-24 lens attached to my A7R IV with the lens cap attached and carried it in my bag, It really is very manageable. The additional weight of the NiSi S5 is negligable compared to the superior results that can be achieved.

I've just ordered the Kase rear filter NDs again after watching this video. The first time I tried them, I could not get them installed but didn't try side ways shown in the video:

Fred - any word yet on how well they work?
I would only recommend the Kase or Aurora ND rear filters because they are only 0.3m thick. The Haida is 0.5m and at this thickness, field curvature gets very affected. (center will be sharp and corners OOF)
I've tested the Aurora prototype and there is only very minimal induced field curvature at 14mm and f/2.8. At f/4, it's pretty much masked and it's not an issue with longer focal lengths at f/2.8.
The problem with the Kase rear NDs is that they are not easy to attach. The first time I bought one (from Ebay) I could not attach it into the rear slot. I purchased another one and will try it again following Kase's video above.
If you want zero field curvature at 14mm and f/2.8, the only good option is the Lee 4-stop ND gel. (0.1m)
It works ok as long as you don't shoot towards the light.
