I think in the center there is no real difference between the two lenses, stopped down and wide open (which says a lot about how good this zoom is). Here a two 100% center crops, both shot at f/5.6:
Compared to the Batis 18, the center sharpness of the Batis is slightly better than the 14-24 at nearly all apertures, but not in the corners, even stopped down.
Are those both uncorrected? The perspective distortion of the zoom looks significantly better.

The profile correction in LR was activated for both images, but this function doesn't correct perspective distortion.
The horizontal shooting angle was slightly different between the two lenses (just a couple of degrees), but with ultra wide angle lenses this combined with a slight tilt can lead to different perspective distortion.

I am thinking of switching to MF for this lens and at f5.6 14mm where do you guys focus on to ensure max DOF with infinity be in focus? 6m? My closest subject is probably around 1-2m, mostly 2m I think.

How about f/8?
Try Mark Galer's tip on getting hyperfocal distance visually.

After using this lens for a short vacation, I kind of regret selling my sony 12-24mm for this lens.
It is heavier and harder to shoot with.
The f2.8 isn't really useful for my kind of shooting and I misses the 12mm more.
For my usage, the additional corner sharpness at wide aperture is just useless as I am usually limited by DOF...
The AF feels less reliable, I don't remember so many OOF pics with the sony 12-24mm...
I am seriously considering buying back the 12-24mm... should not have itchy fingers
I love the sigma 35mm f1.2 though... no regrets whatsoever for that lens.......Show more →
For me it was a really tough call to buy back the 12-24 but I'm glad I did. Love 12mm so maybe my big reason but also size and weight is important. I use these wide lenses on the street a lot. I'm okay with my cheating 77mm filter trick. 16mm is the hot spot for that. I rarely filter 12mm anyway as it looks funky. Sure I maybe missing a touch of sharpness but with super wides it's not the biggest deal. Rather get the shot and on my copy 14mm nails the corners

How about f/8?
I use focus magnify and focus peaking set to low, usually f5.6-f11

As others had already reported: 24mm is the weakest point of this lens. I will probably use it as a 14-20mm zoom and use my Loxia 21 and Loxia 25 above 20mm.
That was my intention with the Sigma at first too. But after having obtained a well centered copy of the Sigma, and comparing it side by side with (good copies of) the Loxia 21 and 25, I saw no sharpness advantage with the Loxias even at wide apertures.
Here is an 'infinity' corner comparison for the Loxia 21 against the zoom at 100% on A7r4, both at 2.8 focused for the corner. Although not evident here, the zoom also has the advantage of lower CA than the Loxias (and also notably less than the CV21/1.4)

What are people using for filters? I can't justify the price of the Nisi kit just yet. The gel seems like a hassle out on the field.
I don't own this lens just yet, but traveling with bulbous filter systems for my rokinon 14mm has become too much of a hassle for me. I saw these at Photoplus this year. And I'm extremely interested.

This clip-on filter has 1mm thickness and will induce enormous field curvature on your images at the wide range. Even stopping the lens down to f/16 won't mask this issue completely. I would not recommend it.
Very soon rear filters from Haida, Aurora and Nisi will be available for this lens. It looks like the Aurora's filter will only be 0.2mm thick and that's similar to gel filters which do not cause any ill-effect on field curvature.
