p.1 #1 · Hasselblad 907x & CFV II 50C

Anyone noticed the Hasselblad teasers on instagram / their webpage?

There will be an announcement tomorrow 'expanding the Hasselblad experience'. The latest teaser on IG shows something that looks like a part of a V-series camera, with the subline 'See our legacy become your future'.
https://www.instagram.com/p/By2a66VHDOQ/

I'm now quite sure they will announce a camera based on the XCD, but in the shape of a classic V-series camera. They actually presented a similar prototype in 2016 (https://www.dpreview.com/sample-galleries/8549698202/hasselblad-v1d-concept/9459365130)

My guess is 100mp 44x33 sensor, with (default) option to crop to 33x33 for a 75mp image.

I think the concept looks pretty cool & would love to have one. Most adapted FF lenses would also work well because 33x33 is only slightly larger than 36x24 (47mm diagonal vs 43mm).

The V1D + XCD45, CV 1.7/35, CV 1.5/75... too bad it will likely cost >10k

You may be right, but the other two teasers showed the shutter and power buttons from the X1D grip so, I doubt it's going to look much like that prototype.

I think it's also possible it could be a fixed-lens SWC-like camera (with a 17 or 18mm or, better yet, a 24mm PC lens).

Or it could just be their 100MP X1D that allows for use as a digital back on a Flex-like tech camera solution they'll offer.

The camera will elicit oohs and ahhs, the price will elicit snickering.

It's a new X system camera. I got that from Hasselblad. Most likely and X1D mkII (this has been registered) with the same sensor and some performance upgrades (faster startup, new processor, bluetooth (confirmed)), OR the X1D 100C (unlikely but I really want it to be!!).

Personally I just wish they'd release the zoom already.....

The 907x + CFV II 50c is gorgeous. If that back had a BSI sensor, I'll be culling my gear for sale in preparation.

I wish the 907 had a V mount instead of the XCD mount, though I understand adapters are certainly an option. I like that they're making this though, it's like an interchangeable lens SWC body!

First bit of MF kit that’s given me real pause. I’d love to get the CFV back and a film back, then the 907 for a portable MF camera...

A 500CM would make a fantastic adapter. Then you'd not only get to use the CS in the C/CF lenses, you could cock it without removing the lens from the camera.

It’d be cool if the 907 works with the older CFV backs as well. Could put together a more affordable system with something like the CFV16. Might be time to sell my Contax CY glass and get a 500C/M for now... been wanting one anyway.

My guess is the older backs will lack the control interface necessary to drive the 907. I don't recall the original 50c having any electrical interfaces on that side of the mount, but it's been a few years. I could be wrong.

Wouldn't be surprised but one can hope... of course it’ll be interesting to see where this is priced. Seems it should be way more accessible than MF backs used to be.

Very curious about the pricing as well. The original had a $10k MSRP. Hopefully they can beat that this time around.

The 907x looks super cool & not too far off the V1D concept (actually even better due to compatibility with V series cameras).

I'm hoping that the price will actually be a bit lower than the 6k for the X1DII. After all it is basically the same camera, but probably cheaper to build (?)..

+1. There's no reason it should cost any MORE than the X1DII, and should actually be cheaper to produce since there's no EVF, etc.

I'm hoping the CFV 50 II comes in under $5k USD. First Gen CFV 50's are going for @$7k (one seller on eBay is asking $15K!!). A good CFV 16 with no issues will set you back @$3k (if you can even find one).

I think a CFV 50 II for @$5k would be "reasonable".

Just remember the sensor is not the full 6x6cm. It is quite a bit smaller at 43.8 x 32.9 mm. And it's actually 4:3 aspect. A 1:1 crop will effectively give you a similar overall sensor area as "full frame" digital. (32.9 x 32.9mm vs 36 x 24mm)

Doesn't sound quite as good when you really look at the specs! haha

Plus it's cropping your lenses 1.45x, meaning that 80mm f/2.8 Planar is now 116mm. So it goes from 44mm f/1.5 to 63mm f/1.5 in FF equivalence. Not necessarily a bad thing, but those super wide Hassy lenses are going to jump in value!

The other thing is that you could get a Fuji GFX 50R used for @$3,500 and use your Hasselblad V lenses on it (I think). Basically the same exact sensor size and crop, but in a smaller, lighter package with an EVF, etc. I know, I know, the whole point is to use that beautiful 500 C/M body, but still...

It will definitely be interesting to see how it shakes out.

Looks super cool, I definitely want one for my 503. Maybe in 5 years when I can get one used for under a grand, lol. The crop factor is definitely unfortunate and personally doesn't entice me enough to upgrade over full frame when I have 42MP and nice small lenses.

I see it as a nice transition into the XCD system for those still invested in the V system. Use your old longer V lenses on the original 500 series body, but if you want to shoot wide it makes sense to get the 907x and XCD lenses.

The crop of the sensor is to the point where I don't think there are any wide legacy Hasselblad lenses that will still be wide angle once cropped... And while those were good lenses back in their day, the XCD wides should outperform them on digital.

I could see using the new back on a 500C/M for some purposes, but for wide angle shooting, it would make more sense, IMO, mated to the 907 and used with current 'digital' wides.

A good CFV16, with sensor size of 36.7mm x 36.7mm, is still a good option if you have Hasselblad body and V lenses. While the resolution is low, the 'fat-pixel' files from CFV16 are excellent. As for Hasselblad V lenses, I used them on Fuji GFX 50S without any shortcomings.

+1. I am thinking exactly along the same lines if I want to upgrade to digital medium-format (currently I only do it with film). Reason why I decided to further upgrade my V-lens system was to be able to use the same lenses later additionally on a newer digital mirrorless body. I also keep eyeing the GFX system. At this point using existing V lenses with adapter on the GFX 50R is probably the best deal out there to do digital medium-format of this quality.

Do you have to close the aperture within the V-lens to the desired f-stop before taking a photo with the GFX? Not sure if it would work with the same aperture closing mechanism from wide open to the desired f-stop when the shutter is released as applied on a 500 C/M for example?
