Right. I was stupidly doing it linearly. 3 stops, so 3x. That's what I get for doing it half awake! Thanks!

I'd love to do more insext macro but it seems like pesticides have killed much of the insects in sourh Florida. So I mostly so birds with some lizards or a rare raccoon.

The $3500 comes from the price of the lens plus both the 1.4X and 2X TCs.

The 2x tc doesn't work well with it and it wouldn't be comparable to the 200-600 anyway...

I doubt it would be AF. I'm pretty sure there's only like 2mm flange distance difference between the two mounts so it would be really hard to cram those electronics into a decent adapter, especially one that you would want to use with a 600mm lens...

Why don't you consider it virtually the same? Close enough to me. One might be better, as we will see in reviews, but a 40mm difference and 2/3 of a stop isn't much. And weight/size matters too. If I need to switch, I will. It is just weird to have to trade monetarily in a downwards direction for something better. For similar reasons, I feel bad for Sony users who spent $10k on the 400 2.8 if they really would have preferred the new 600 f4.

No, for wildlife the a7riii is not good enough imo. It is why I bought

I'm not sure I understand your argument. It sounds like you are essentially saying that Sony shouldn't put out any better lenses than the ones they have now because they might potentially make current lens owners sad... If I am wrong, please correct me, but the gist of this argument is ludicrous.

The FE to Nikon Z adapter is razor thin and still allows for AF... it can be done!

I'm sorry that you were unable to understand despite me discussing it in depth multiple times. There is not more I can offer to explain. I guess we will just have to accept the gap in understanding.

I believe these are all meant to compare the 100-400 with the 400/2.8. At 400mm the 100-400 is f/5.6 and the 400 is f/2.8. That is 2 stops and that enables a shutter speed 4X as fast. If the DOF at f/2.8 is too shallow and you operate instead at f/4 (that is my usual choice), that is one stop and enables 2X faster shutter speed. If you add a 1.4x TC to both lenses, the 100-400 with TC is 560/8 and the 400 is 560/4. Again that is two stops and shutter speed of 4X. There is no situation where there is a three stop difference.

That makes sense. The comparison with 3 stops was the 400 compared to the 100-400 with tc for some reason.

I've only seen some sample footage but it seems "Good". Not native-like, but workable. I'm sure as time goes on and more is decoded about the Nikon Z (And canon RF for that matter) mount it will improve. It certainly looks like it works better than I thought it would this early on in the mount's life.

If it's anything like native Rf adapters, I sincerely doubt it will give any utility with any shot of moving target (meaning people walking, not even BIF)

Some will be happy, others disappointed. FE 200-600mm Available in July, FE 600mm f/4 GM is Just a Development Announcement.

As long as the 1.4X TC is compatible, I am perfectly fine with the 200-600mm, at least for a while .

Hi Joshua,

Let's wait and see how it performs compared with the 100-400mm GM alone and with the 1.4X TC. If the lens needs to be stopped down to f8 and either does or doesn't equal the performance of the 100-400mm GM with the 1.4X TC less chance of my purchase. And if it doesn't have the capability of acceptng the 1.4X TC then even less chance of my purchase.

The 2x teleconverter on the 100-400 is actually quite a good combo.

Hi Rich,
I agree with that but Sony's lenses have been really superb performers and I really wouldn't think that the lens would perform subpar to the GM 100-400mm lens PLUS the 1.4X TC in both optical characteristics and AF performance. I think that's pretty much a safe bet. Now, the compatibility with at least the 1.4X TC is a less safe bet, however. But, yet I am pretty convinced that the 1.4X TC will work on that lens. We will find out in approximately 24 hours from now...

The 70-200/4 G was designed before the TCs arrived, and I think that was the case for the 70-300/4.5-5.6 G as well. So among telephoto lenses announced after the TCs arrived, only the 135/1.8 GM doesn’t work with TCs, but that one has a rear element that would collide with the protruding part of a TC. The same appears from the optical layout to be true even for the 70-300/4.5-5.6 G.

From the above there is no way we can tell from existing lenses, if the 200-600/5.6-6.3 will be compatible with TCs.

If their claim of TCs only supporting GM lenses is valid, no 200-600 will be compatible with 1.4x and 2.0x...
