p.2 #1 · Is anyone excited for the new 100mm f2.8 Tokina macro?
I'm sure optically it will be very good, as Tokina makes quality lenses, and it's a Macro...they've made some great macro lenses over the last 20 years. It'll be a good option for those who only do Macro occasionally and don't want to spend a ton of money for a macro lens.
I have no interest because I have the Sony 90mm, and between the two, I'd lean that way due to likely better AF, internal focus design for better working distance (though likely at the expense of some FL, though for me that's fine), OSS and a focus limiter.

Apparently many people think that because the internal lens design appears the same (or very, very similar) that it literally is just the old 100mm macro for DSLRs, just repackaged.
*Edit* just remembered @bjornthun@ in this thread already made that conclusion
Hmmm, dunno what to think about that. On the one hand, my old Tokina was probably every bit as sharp as the Sony 90 so I guess the case could be made that it's worth the money....but on the other hand, if it's essentially the same lens i dunno how I feel about paying 2x as much as the old version. If I were shooting strictly macro I'd buy a $30 adapter and a used Tokina for ~$250 and just focus manually.

Not excited at all since I never use AF in the first place when taking close-up or macro shots. I am using with adapter the following older macro lenses instead which deliver everything I need on my A7R (not mentioning lenses with extension tubes):
+ Sigma 105/2.8 EX DG macro EF lens
+ Canon 100/2.8 EF macro lens
+ Canon MP-E 65/2.8 EF macro lens
+ Canon 50/3.5 macro FD lens

I’m quite amazed that all kind of vintage adapted lens or Laowa / Rokinon / Meike get thorough coverage yet nobody cared about this one. Is there something wrong with the Tokina brand or the 100mm FL?

Tokina makes some very nice lenses...it's probably not getting a lot of play because it doesn't break a lot of ground and there are already several options around this focal length, and a lot of us have other macros already. For those without a macro already, it's a good lower cost option if you're OK with extending focus.

Yes, Sony produced a great 1:1 macro lens from the start and Voigtlander recently released a superb 110/2.5 macro.
The Tokina is the cheapest AF native option at the moment, so it should be a great alternative for those considering a macro lens. Its main competition is the Sony 90/2.8.
The Laowa 100/2.8 will be MF, 2:1, APO and will have 13 aperture blades for rounder specular highlights at smaller apertures. It was announced a while back but it's still not available for pre-order.

The Laowa 2:1 is much more interesting to me. Anybody know if the aperture blades are rounded on that one? 13 blades is an exciting number, especially with macro when pretty much all of your images will have a shallow DoF unless you stack focus.

I really hope at some point they put out a GM macro with a longer focal length, 11 or 13 aperture blades, and XA elements so that bokeh is smooth as heck. Not because I could afford one, but because I want to see what a G Master macro would be capable of

I think the Laowa 100/2.8 APO macro (2:1) will be available for pre-order this month.
