p.1 #1 · Let's see your standard lightroom presets for Sony alpha

Hey Folks,

Not every photo deserves a full roundtrip to photoshop. But every raw deserves a little treatment in lightroom

I am still searching for a good standard presets that I can apply to most of my images (kids, holiday stuff, non paid work).

So I thought: Let's all throw in our lightroom presets that we use for this task! Perhaps others can benefit of it and can tweak their own presets.

I will start with my own preset. Find here the link to the lightroom cc classic file I use for most of my images. I usually only change the exposure slider and am quite happy for most of my family photos.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/che0z7w89qwaifo/ImportStandardSonyAlpha.xmp?dl=1

A before and after is also attached.

Looking forward to your presets and styles!

Cute kid!. Not sure if you are open to C&C, but you should definitely consider fixing the white balance on this photo. You owe it to the little guy!

Also, the exposure if closer in the original. Fix the black and the white point and you should be all set.

One could think that DTFagus wants to troll.

Not only is the "after" photo really bad - totally overexposed, ugly white balance etc. -, while the "before" is already perfectly fine; writing "I usually only change the exposure slider" smells totally like wanting to muck around with us...

Why should anyone want to share presets with you when you obviously have no eye for what's looking good anyway?

Presets are never once size fits all, so applying a "default" preset to every single photo, regardless of lighting/subject matter/etc is pointless.

And I know you aren't necessarily looking for C&C, but I do agree that your "after" photo has some major issues and I wouldn't be applying that preset to any photo unless that's a very specific look you are actually going for.

Those are two different photos. Look at the fingers. The second one is a mess...tough to mess up a photo with Live Display turned on.
Also,settings vary. No one answer.

My presets are all very subtle, things that give a slight s-curve while either recovering some shadows or toning down some highlights, a few that are meant to increase saturation under various lighting conditions. In fact, it's a very similar approach to what Phillip Reeve describes on his website, and I'd recommend it as a starting point for any presets: https://phillipreeve.net/blog/how-i-create-images-part-3-postprocessing/

My preset, trying to emulate canon colors

https://mega.nz/#F!MFZSCQxL!bOlpdo44BJJTBqCAM1-wKQ

That version is for a73 and a7r3. Download the .dcp file and the .xmp file (version 1 and 4 are the best)

I don't agree - they look the same to me.

Thank you all for the quick responses. I have to admit I thought this forum was a bit friendlier. Obviously I am no pro and I shoot only for fun and for my family. I actually did like the outcome of my preset. But now I have to reconsider the childhood memories for the last three years since they are all badly processed and look ugly...

Thank you for the c&c anyway, I am here to learn and so I will do.

Perhaps it helps if I rephrase my question:

You come home from a family holiday with 2000 raws with 400 you like to keep. 30 of them you like so much that you process them individually. What do you do with the other 370?

I was hoping for a preset you are usually happy with. I know it wont fit any situation. But it would be better than not processing the image at all.

Or is the simple answer "it is not possible, take the time or throw the pictures away" ?

Hoping this gets this thread in a more productive and friendlier direction...

Also thank you NumberTwo for your presets! I just jused them as a starting point and altered the basic settings. This is what I came up with. Really like it

I still think the original shot looks the best. I have presets for various sharpening levels, lens corrections (when using a big stopper etc) and some B&W which I use as starting points.

You're welcome! I really hate oranges and reds in Adobe profiles, and I've been some time sharing my presets un dpreview and here, first based on my a7r2 and now on my a73.

I tried a similar attempt as you without success. I actually expected much more contribution because I also think that this is a very relevant topic for people without unlimited time resources (everybody?!)..

Feel free to use my preset:

The colors do look off to me. I understand that's all part of personal preference, but first things first: have you checked to make sure your monitor is calibrated? With a lot of new computers implementing a red-shift night mode, color fidelity seems to go out the window.

Don't shoot RAW. Simply shoot JPEG. The results will be better for you, the Sony JPEG engine is just fine.

In my experience this is one of the most friendly and mature photography forums out there, at least outside of more specialized venues. It's the internet so there are always going to be people who have become so habituated to arguing and belittling others that they just can't help themselves. Ignore them and keep trying to hone your craft.

I wish I had presets to share with you but I don't use them. I should probably rectify that.....

Good topic actually. I historically tweak individual pictures individually and cull maybe the 5-10 best in the set even if it’s hundreds and work on them that way. I’ve always thought it’s better to keep a few excellent shots than a ton of mediocre ones.
