Chez, nice shots, you seem to have a great time there. You will be amazed how it looks like up there in the mountains where it comes from !!
Yes all rivers start out pure and clean but it's us humans have our ways to pollute them. Happens to just about every River on earth.
However the Ganges is regarded a Holy River and these pollutants are overlooked as the need to wash away ones sins is just too much of a draw.
Let's not forget the millions of litres of raw sewage that gets pumped into the Ganges every single day. The fecael counts are off the map in some locations.
It's really a shame as the Ganges is one of the holiest rivers in the world yet it's treated like a cesspool. I'm so amazed at the devotion of the people to bathe away their sins in such water.

I spent 8 days in Varanasi photographing life as it occurs along the Ganges river. The river is the cities life blood, many come daily to the river to pray, bathe, wash away their sins, do their laundry, cremate their loved ones, or just sit along it and meditate or do yoga.
It's an amazing place to wander around, getting lost in the old narrow alleys or just sit down on one of the many ghats and watch people as they go about their daily lives. The early morning ( still dark ) spiritual rituals that are performed by individuals as they enter the cold water and set adrift candles with flowers is breath taking.
Truly a photographer's paradise.
