First let me say that I last used an A9 about a year and a half ago, but I still have yet to use any camera that focuses as well as it does. It's freakishly good, and freakishly accurate. Especially after the firmware update to bring the a6400 features to it, it'll still be the better focuser, predominantly because of the crazy fast readout speed, which no other Sony can match.
That said the a6400 is the closest any other Sony camera has come to the A9. It feels closer to the A9 than the A7III, and the A7III focuses very, very well.

I am 99 percent sure you can mount the Meike battery grip that fits the a6300 on the 6400. The meike grip was the only way I found my a6500 usable with longer lenses fwiw
Just as an update. I used the camera with the 1.4x and 2x today on perched and feeding birds like Juncos, Cardinals, Chickadees and Sparrows. The AF and sharpness are great with the 1.4x. I didn't get a lot of time with the 2x, but my general impression is that it functions very well with it too. I don't think I'll have any reservations using it for birds.
I have to decide if I'm getting one or not in the next week or so.
My a7III needs to go in for repair on slot #1.
The spring doesn't work to kick out the SD card.
I've tried the a6300 before, it was anything but ideal with the 1.4 on it.
With the 2x, it focuses, but it's real slow.
I may just run with my Canons while it's in for repair.
It's good to have choices.

You did great Roberta. It looks like you are getting committed to the Sony system.
Here is a link to a very good video and free book on ways to set the Sony cameras up including for action photography. All of Mark Galer's videos and books are well done and worth watching.

Have you used the a9? How does it compare?
I have an A9, but I haven’t tried a side by side comparison yet. It’s hard to do because the FOV is different. But I’ll report back once I do. I much prefer the ergonomics and handling of the A9, but I’m used to it so that will have a bearing too. I’m curious to see how the A6400 works with my canon lenses as well.
