So if I understand your explanation: up to 400MM (or 560 with a 100-400 and 1.4 adapter) advantage FF - over 400MM (etc) advantage crop. That makes perfect sense but for portraits, etc no advantage in resolution to a crop sensor. I would only differ in your explanation in that for most focal lengths (rather than just short focal lengths) the FF senor has the advantage.

I used to own an A6000 and there is no contest in that I like the XT-20 much more and I believe the image quality is superior with the Fuji.

Not sure what impact the issue of "more pixels at a given focal length" has on performance. I like the Fuji I own, it simply isn't as good at certain things as the Sony A7RIII. The Fuji certainly wins on size, weight and fun to use factors but it is not as good in other areas such as resolution, focus acquisition, or low light performance. I suspect the newer generation Fuji's narrow this gap.

Sony may have better AF — that's what I've heard — but the newest Fujifilm cameras have very competent AF.

Full frame will have more system resolution than crop and often greater pixel resolution. But the 24MP and 26MP Fujifilm sensors (made by Sony!) are really good, too. I can confidently produce 20" x 30" prints with very high quality.

Sony may well have higher ISO performance than Fujifilm, but one of the specific reasons I use my XPro2 is to do handheld night street photography in urban areas, for which it works great.

I just wish I could like Sony. Would have saved some money. Their eye AF is one of the best out there. General tech wise, pretty nice but even being an engineer I don't like the cameras. I could have gotten used to them over time but why. Fuji felt so much better in hand. Started with XT1 when I had 5dmk3. To me that little cropper did quite well specially with 56mm f1.2, 23mm f1.4 and the 35mm f1.4. Then when Fuji announced the big cropper, I had to get one, just for trying it once and after that
...Show more

Today I lugged my Canon 5dmk4 with 16-35 f/2.8mk2. I had great pleasure with family time/documentation. Holding back on buying the 16-35 f/2.8mk3 as I'm already decided on eventually buying a Canon FF mirrorless with the RF 15-35 f/2.8IS. What that got to do with this thread? I guess size wise and for stills the 5dmk4 has great high iso and capture almost anything you throw at it. Fuji APS-C is great but it's not on par with FF performance. Fuji's solution is to go into a niche category of Medium format which a small percentage of Fuji aps-c shooters get into. FF market is where any walks of life can dive into and have universal application which is not really categorized as niche hardware.

My point is when I think of the Fuji system there's a lot to consider. They have already claimed never to venture in the FF world. My wish would for them to develop a GFX 50S mk2 that performs like the XT3 quad processor body but retain the lowest possible mega pixels as many people do NOT need 50MP and the sweet spot of 24 -30MP seems to be great for many that do not need crazy high res. As we know everyone is different but putting cash on the table people demand certain features. The fresh evolution of Nikon and Canon FF mirrorless will possibly gain some photogs back from the ones diving into Fuji.

This is where the discussion of XT3 and A7iii gets interesting. The A73 is just 24MP which is a nice sweet spot in resolution for most printing needs. You can have light form factor to heavy weight GMaster pro class glass. Incredibly responsive body and you can go out and buy an A7R3 for more MP if you need it. One trick pony that can shoot great video, stills and capture almost anything you throw at it. Low light? No problem having raw files keeping great detail.

I own the X-t2 and I sold a bunch of my Fuji glass to reduce my investment in the APS-C system. I did not buy the X-t3 as Fuji put zero investment in improving the high iso category to a different level to the X-t2. The high iso is very good for what it is but my 5dmk4 and A7iii just keeps my Raw files intact without falling apart during challenging light.

The OP should simply test and see what they like. What meets the photographic needs since both camera's are great.

My preference is simply personal and everyone chooses tools to cater their needs. In my case my virtually brand new 50-140mm gets no camera time as I do not care for the look of f/4 Full frame equiv on my Fuji. The look I get with my Gmaster 70-200 or my Canon 70-200 f/2.8IS mk2 is more what I expect to see if I'm lugging the weight of a larger lens. Using the Fuji 50-140mm is great but I might as well buy a Sony 70-200 f/4 or Canon 70-200 f/4IS mk2 for the f/4 dof on ff. Certainly f/4 is 1 stop slower on the FF but for most of my needs good light would be present if I chose slower f/4 glass. No compromise I simply get f/2.8 zooms for unknown conditions in events.

What many people considering Fuji probably do no know is that Fuji produces incredible eye candy with almost no effort in post processing. The RAW file is cooked with Fuji goodness. Post processing Fuji is almost effortless. Canon takes some effort but I still feel Sony still requires a tad more time to meet my colour/render preference editing RAW. Even with a bunch of personal presets in LR my Sony still takes a little more effort. Skin tones on Fuji is excellent and Canon is very good too. Sony skin tones for me still takes some time to massage.

The OP should really rent and get a feel of what they get into.

My friend that just dived into Fuji with an X-t3 is extremely disappointed with the high iso. He's a Nikon FF shooter and is now up in the air in deciding what to do. In my case if Fuji made a full frame system I'd immediately invest deep into whatever FF lens they produce. If Fuji produced a GFX 50S mk2 with Xt3 body performance and glass to support that is something I'd also consider for the Fuji colours and render.

Canon FF mirrorless is now a bit of a hiccup for me. I think there are a fair share of Canon users waiting to dive into the EOS R when they develop a pro version with dual cards and better body performance. The future RF lens lineup is very impressive. People are seeking universal application and expect high body/lens performance. Nikon is very aggressive in jumping on the mirrorless bandwagon too.

So many features and brands to choose from these days.....

p.3 #4 · Should i sell my a7iii and switch over to Fujifilm xT3???

Hate to revive an old thread, but I am looking at these two cameras and there is a lot of knowledge here. I have been a Canon shooter since the AE1 program and currently have a MKIII and several lenses, so for me, the choice is between the A7III (or R) with an adapter or going all in with Fuji. Another consideration is, I don't care about video at all.

What do you guys think about my choice given that information?

Hi there - I'm a current Canon shooter evaluating a Fuji system right now. What kind of photography do you do? My initial thoughts having tried the R, is I am loving this XT3. I need to shoot more, I"ve just received it and mostly putzing around. I do come from old school film cameras and this might be part of the allure for me. BUt I need a lighter kit as I get older, and this is looking very promising for me.

My current cameras are the 5D3 and the 1D4, for reference.

There's a lot to think about when contemplating a change like this, and much of it comes down to your intentions and expectations.

A logical replacement for your 5D3 would be another, newer Canon body. On the DSLR side the 5D4 is an excellent camera that will work perfectly with your existing lenses and leverage your familiarity with the Canon interface. In terms of image quality you aren't going to get radically better files out of the Sony FF bodies than from the current Canon systems.

If your interest is specifically in moving away from DSLRs and towards mirrorless, and you want full frame... today you actually have quite a few choices. (And Canon users will relatively soon have even more than they have now.) Obviously you have the fine Sony bodies (or entire systems if you move to their lenses), but you also have fine cameras from Nikon and a couple from Canon. Going forward, mirrorless will increasingly replace DSLR systems from all brands.

The Canon R gets a lot of very positive reviews by users. It is completely compatible with your current lenses via one of three Canon adapters. (There is a basic one equivalent to what you'd use to adapt Canon lenses to Sony, plus others that add features.) There is a less expensive Canon full frame mirrorless body, too, but if you like the 5D3 you will likely gravitate toward the more expensive model.

Sony is certainly an option, too. The A7 bodies produce excellent image quality, and there is no question that they are serious tools. For you there are pluses and minuses to that choice. A plus is the excellent Sony sensors, though the real world differences between these and the newest Canon sensors is much smaller than it once was and is mainly (arguably "only") a matter of marginally better DR and better low light performance. Here you'll also be using adapters, with the possibility of eventually moving to Sony branded lenses.

Nikon is an option, too, though it is a bit difficult for me to see a compelling reason for you to make that switch. That is not meant at all as a criticism of the fine Nikon mirrorless cameras, but more as a recognition that you'd have to make a wholesale switch (body and lenses) that wouldn't really gain you much of anything over other options.

I've used the Fujifilm x-trans APS-C cameras (alongside my full frame Canon system) for about seven years now. I like it a great deal for portions of my work, especially travel, street, and (more recently) macro photography. I very much like its smaller size and lower weight, the excellent lens options (I own a number of primes, a macro, and a couple of zooms), and its very good low light performance. (Handheld night street photography is one of my "things," and the Fujifilm cameras work very well for this.)

(When it comes to Fujifilm v. Sony comparisons, keep in mind that both Fujifilm and Sony cameras use Sony sensors.)

A Fujifilm system can be quite small and light, especially if you select some of the smaller primes — very high quality lenses that have f/2 or f/2.8 maximum apertures. Even some of the larger aperture primes (f/1.4, f/1.2, and f/2 for the 90mm) are relatively smaller than their FF equivalents. Aside from the 18-55mm kit lens (also excellent), many of the other, more "serious" Fujifilm zooms are fairly large and heavy... though excellent.

As to giving up Canon and "switching" to Fujifilm, my recommendation is to not move too fast. Before you unload the Canon gear, pick up an inexpensive Fujifilm body (XE3, XT30, XT2, for example) and one or two of the inexpensive primes (or that 18-55 kit zoom) and see how you like it. You might decide the this is a fine alternative to Canon full frame. Or you might decide, as I did, that the two systems complement one another.

Thanks, this is an excellent and well thought out reply. If I do get a Fuji, I will definitely shoot in parrallel for a while before dumping my Canon gear.

Short answer, for if people should change systems: No.

Fuji does look good, though. I'd guess it is probably a tighter, more refined camera than Sony. But I haven't really used either.

I hear complaints about Sony color, I mostly shoot Canon, and that definitely has good color. But there is so much pp you can do, for color, as well. Maybe play with the saturation slider or check out some YouTube videos or tutorial sites or something.

For stills the XT30 is just as capable though I prefer the XT3 body. The XT2 is also a good option if you don't need lighting fast auto focus or the high FPS raw stills modes.

As long as you don't need the high ISO performance you'll be happy with Fuji cameras.

I switched from Fuji to Sony.
Then switched back to Fuji
Then switched back to Sony.
And now switched back again to Fuji.

This time I'm gonna stick.

Main reason is the OOC JPGs which are wonderful on the Fuji, and terrible on the Sony (IMO).

Second reason is I enjoy way, wayy more with the Fuji. It's really boring and less engaging for me to shoot with the Sony.

I moved from Canon 5D3 to Fuji XT3. I shoot mostly events and sports. The Fuji mirrorless is smaller, lighter, and more accurate focusing than the Canon DSLR. AF performance is comparable when the XT3 is properly configured. The XT3 weather sealing is at least as good as the 5D3, which is important for my photography because I do have to shoot in rain.

For me these questions come down to lenses more than cameras. I shot with the Canon 5D3 because I had a stable of EOS lenses from the film days. I never shoot with adapted lenses because AF performance is paramount for my shooting. So, once the lens mount changes it's back to the drawing board for me.

Mostly, I switched to Fuji because they have a full lineup of fast primes and zooms in all the FF-equivalent classic focal lengths. Fujinon lenses are optically among the best I've used, and can be substantially less expensive than FF lenses of comparable quality, particularly when purchased on one of Fuji's frequent rebates.

Hope that helps!

John

I agree with pretty much all of that, though I'd offer a couple more thoughts on the 5DIII-to-Fujiflm AF question:

1. I'm using the older XPro2, and while I'd say that Fujifilm AF can be "as accurate" as that of the Canon DSLRs of that vintage, it isn't as fast.

2. The 5DIII isn't quite state of the art from Canon either, and it is an older vintage camera than the XT3.

For reference, I'm an enthusiastic user of both Canon and Fujifilm systems.

I have both Sony and Fuji and I'm keeping both. Got into Fuji first and then Sony as more of an experiment not expecting to like Sony and have since filled out my Sony kit. Outside of having the film sims to stack on my edits there's nothing in Fuji that would make me want to sell my Sony gear and vice versa. I have even mismatched the systems to cover events, both handle events very well. I prefer the A7RII and the 70-200GM for my corporate headshot work over the X-T3 and 50-140 (the full frame DOF definitely blurs out the background better (it's wrinkly so the less visible that is the better)). The X-T3 is funner to shoot, but after getting used to the A7RII and programming the buttons to how I need them to be the Sony's no slouch either. None of the systems are bad or better than the other it's just a bunch of differing pros and cons.

Hi, you mentioned "Manual focusing on the Fuji is easier if that's any interest to you."

Can you explain it? I am using legacy manual focus lens and am thinking to get A7RIi instead of xt2.

Is manual focus easier on Fuji?
Thx,

However...IMO the A73 ergos are better than the X-T3, and lenses...in general...are around the same size and weight, as long as you're comparing the Fuji lenses to the Sony G lenses. The A73 battery trounces the XT3 battery as well.

Manual focusing on the Fuji is easier if that's any interest to you.

The one reason I'm sticking with Sony over Fuji is the image quality. The Sony image quality is just leagues beyond Fuji to my eye, the Fuji files are just quite often

I find that the A7R EVF is a bit hard to use when manual focusing, and the focusing peaking colors seem to be easier to use (at least for me) on Fuji.

Just keep in mind that your adapted lenses effective focal length won't be the same on Fuji and Sony. That being said, I greatly preferred the look my Helios 44-4 gave me on the cropped Fuji sensor, acting closer to an 85mm than a 50mm.

I own both.
I’m blessed to shoot for a living.
I run the Fuji everyday, and the Sony is for sale.
Th Fujifilm does everything I need it to, but the most important thing is, it inspires me.
I enjoy using it. I take more photos for fun!
I don’t chase bokeh, and I am not a pixel,peeper.
The Sony is superb in every way..the Fuji just as much so, for what I shoot.
Not one client has complained. Interiors, headshots, events...the Fuji does most anything I ask of it.
It’s all In the end, a person choice, as well as a financial one.

Good luck on your decision.

My clients are also super impressed with the Fuji images. I sold my a7III a while back.
I have the X-H1 and X-T2. Will get a X-T3 soon.

The only thing I miss from the a7III is the lower noise at 3200+ ISO.

Stop buying gear or switching brands. Spend your (hard earned and precious) money on classes, education, videos and time with professionals who can teach you about light and composition and post processing and posing etc. Your gear matters very little right now so spending your money on training your eye will yield DRAMATICALLY better images than a new camera or lens will.

Can't argue with that. Especially for new photographers, jumping from brand to brand is unlikely to help much. This isn't to say that you should never consider switching, but I think it is usually better to stick with one thing for a good period of time, analyze what about your gear (if anything) is really impeding your photography, and focus on developing your ability to see photographically and understand technical matters.
