p.1 #1 · I'iwi (Iiwi) aka Scarlet Honeycreeper in Maui Hawaii
During Christmas I visited Haleakala National Park on the island of Maui in Hawaii.
One of my goals was to photograph birds, including the beautiful I'iwi at Hosmer Grove.
The I'iwi, a red honeycreeper, is endemic to Hawaii's forests.
This scarlet bird is also an iconic symbol of Hawaii's past.
Centuries ago, I'iwi feather capes were worn by high-ranking Hawaiian warriors and royalty.
Today the Iiwi is in decline and is currently classified as threatened.
I was fortunate to capture a few images of this very lovely bird.

Apparently, I missed this little beauty when I was there in December. Now I have to go back! Great images, btw. I like them all, but the last is a beauty.

Definitely hit or miss on I'iwi and more experienced local birders would probably know the best times to visit. The last photo with the yellow sunset background is my favorite and has become quite popular with Hawaii birder groups. It's just a little different and that seems to help. Hope you return to Hosmer Grove with better luck next time. Aloha
