Well, three of the lenses, that had my attention, will now cost more, but any rebate is better than no rebate. The EF 11-24L’s rebate remains at $300, and the 16-35L IS rebate also remains unchanged, so an UWA zoom remains a tempting target.

I see that the 5Ds R has maintained its $200 rebate. I believe that the next high-res Canon body may well not be a DSLR, so a second 5Ds R, to keep in reserve, has become a potential goal.

That's possible, but according to the Imaging Resource it won't be the next EOS-R release. Based on their interview with the man at Canon responsible for all of their photographic products, the next EOS-R will be an entry-level model.

A question for you: since a high MP EOS-R will be fully EF lens compatible, why 'stock up' with another 5DsR instead of transitioning to the mirrorless model once it becomes available?

Why is there never a discount on the 400/2.8, 500/4, 600/4, etc.?

Whether or not the next EOS R-series is high-end or low-end, I am concerned that the 5Ds/5Ds R may be a one-off. I did not think, in 2015, that I would need, or want, 50MP, but seeing some bird images, including BIFs, in these forums prompted me to try a 5Ds R, in January 2016, and I have not had one moment’s regret.

The motivation to add a second 5Ds R is that I am less than thrilled with the controls of the EOS R, and if using two cameras, together, on one shoot, common controls and “user interface” are nice, plus, having a reserve, in case of a drop, spill, theft, or natural disaster is comforting. I actually have a pair of 7D II cameras, plus a 5D IV, so already have mostly-identical controls and user interface, but there is something so very special about the images produced by my 5Ds R. Admittedly, paying about $3600 US for a second 5Ds R would be to achieve an ideal; I am not yet sure I can justify paying for this ideal, even if I can “afford” it.

I used the pair of 7D II cameras for evidentiary/forensic/crime scene images, as part of my police patrol duties. I worked night shift my entire career, and shooting in the dark does tend to make one appreciate identical controls. Before the 7D II cameras, I used a pair of 7D cameras, after finding that my 40D and my first 7D, while having a reasonably close UI, had quite disparate WB characteristics, which was significant for images I was not allowed to post-process.

I do not hate the R/RF system, and wish Canon great success with it. When the time seems right, I will probably add a future EOS R-series camera. The adapter, that can hold filters, between the lens and camera body, seems especially interesting, actually increasing my interest in adding an EF 11-24L.

Yes, I know, I over-think things, and spend too much on too many camera bodies.

Thanks for the additional background info. I agree about the benefits of two identical cameras if you need to work simultaneously with both.

Back in 2004 when I got the 1DII and moved the 1D to back-up use, there were still many times I'd use both at sports events and always got a bit thrown off going between them. While the button layout was very similar in most spots, Canon made enough changes on the back to be annoying. Also I'd nearly always favor the 1DII over the 1D for various reasons, such as 8 vs 4 MP, ability to zoom in while reviewing images, the pliability of the files, etc. So when the 1DIIN was announced, I got two of those. Then two of the 1DIII (especially considering with the 1DIII there were bit UI changes), etc.

I think Canon definitely will release something in R mount at or higher than 50MP. Already Sony's been sitting near 50MP for 2-3 years, so it's only a matter of time before they increase it again.

How do these rebates work? I just purchased the 6D Mark II body from B&H.
Never submitted any rebates before

Don't know about the US but this seems general policy in Europe - official price goes up every year, but there are pretty big rebates and if you can use those you pay around the old price, but usually that's of course only for the lenses that Canon needs to move. It's not just Canon, Nikon Europe is even worse with price hikes especially for lenses but also for bodies; most of the gear is now 10-30% more expensive than 2-3 years ago, instead of a bit cheaper every year like we were used to until recently.

Unfortunately the only lens that I want to get rid of, the 100-400II, has been on sale (rebates etc.) at Canon almost continuously for the last two years; probably very few users have paid the official (enforced, MAP) price lately. Apparently Canon realized that the official price is too high compared to the competition from Tamron en Sigma.

Be careful on these rebates. I got a letter saying they could not honor the rebate because the UPC was missing but I know it was in there. I must have at least quadruple checked that everything was included. UPC being the easiest and most obvious thing to include.

A quick Google search and you'll see many people complaining of the same thing from previous Canon rebate offers.

I can't stand companies who play games like this and automatically deny a certain percentage knowing many people will not continue to follow through.

Good chance I will have a bunch of Canon gear up for sale soon.

You can get better "street prices" from CPW than any of these rebates.

Hopefully mine is a very isolated case but I am very suspect of the whole thing after seeing that the rebate is being administered not by Canon but by a third party with the name "The Advertising Checking Bureau, Inc."

A name like that just screams scam. Trying to look like its some sort of oversight agency

I'd have to guess they're assuming the pros who need one are going to buy anyway and any hobbyist with the cash to buy one doesn't need a discount. I'd also think the margins are slimmer on lenses with lower production runs, leaving less room for discounts.

There are always complaints with rebates, often from people who don't follow the instructions or want to bend the rules about valid purchase dates etc. I have used three rebate offers from Canon Europe and although processing was slow and communication in earlier years minimal, they all were paid correctly. And this was despite the processing company being in Ireland, which is often a red flag here for such rebates ;-) I remember many complaints from years ago with Canon US rebates, and suggestions that the processing company would go bankrupt before paying out to customers; but I guess Canon have learned their lesson.

Anyway, it's no longer a concern for me because I got a huge discount on a Nikon D500 kit, so I will also be selling off part of my Canon gear soon

Nobody is talking about invalid dates and no there are not a lot of people complaining but didn't follow instructions. This isn't rocket science. You have to fill out one piece of paper, include your receipt, and the UPC barcode. Pretty hard to mess that up.

Many companies do legit rebates. I have done a few in the past, never had an issue. This is my first one with Canon and really the only reason I bought an aging printer was because of the rebate.

Its very clear the company Canon uses for the rebate auto denies a certain number of these valid claims in hopes the person does not follow through. Like I said, a google search shows people who had this exact situation. All saying they called and told them they had proof of what they sent and magically their UPC barcode was found and the rebate was processed.

Have you already called in and used the UPC magic? Could be a good starting point to fix this.

Ok. I just checked with canon and it shows "Program Violation"
Just in case I took photos of all the documents, UPC label, and etc. How can I go about fixing this with Canon?
