p.1 #1 · Z6 + 300 f/4 Portrait

I bribed my son for a quick portrait to test my new Z6. I thought I would test my old 300 f/4 AF-S lens (now with stabilization). WOW! This camera is pretty sweet!

Great shot and pose of a handsome son.

That combo is not helping my desire for a Z6 (and longstanding desire to pick up the 300/4 AF-S now that they can be had for potato chips).

The 300 AF-S is my most used lens at the moment. Sports, wildlife, landscapes, portraits - It can do it all! (While keeping some money in the bank!)

My sentiments exactly!

Baumgarten, I wonder how good the IBIS works with the 300 f/4 AF-S, you're shot is at 1/200 but curious how low you can go with shutter speed and still get sharp images, great shot of your son by the way! I've pondered the 300 PF and have stayed away from the AF-S because of lack of VR, but if the Z6/300 AF-S combo can get close to the 300 PF with stabilization, that will make it all the harder for me to suppress my desire for the Z6...

I have always loved the 300 AF-S but the lack of VR was certainly a challenge. However, this lens has new life (for me) with the Z6. I will do some tests this weekend to see how low I can go with my shutter speeds. You can snag these 300's for amazing prices these days. While not as light as the PF, the optics on the older version are incredible.

Thank you. How responsive is the AF with the Z6, does it seem to be pretty quick? I remember reading a review where they said the older AF-S 300 f/4 was actually better optically than the 300 PF; however, the weight savings and VR of the PF made it worth it, but with the opportunity of IBIS on the Z series this lens has renewed interest for me.

The Z6 is very responsive with regards to AF and the tracking ability is good enough for my needs.

Sorry, I meant specifically with the 300 f/4, the answer may be the same but was curious how well the "old" 300 did with the new Z6 AF wise.

I'm truly impressed with the speed with which my 300/4 focuses, at least on static subjects. I also have the TC II 1.4. I haven't yet tried that out. As I continue to compare the EOS-R v the Z6, for as much as I like the ergonomics of the R, given my hand size, and I look at the cost of switching systems, the Z6 appears like the better alternative for FF for me. I'll post up some pictures here shortly of the Z6-300/4 pairing. They will be SOOC jpgs. Also, Baumgarten, that is just an absolutely beautiful shot of your son.

Thank you for the kind words. I would agree with your assessment on the focus speed of the 300 f/4. With regards to the stabilization, I find I can hand hold down to 1/125 of a second with the 300 and get consistently sharp images.

This is interesting. In another thread a member stated he did not like the 300mm f4 AF-S with the Z6. He said there was too much "chattering." Yet your portrait looks great. Did you experience any excessive chatter? I have kept and still use the old 300mm f4 AF-S because I actually preferred it to the updated version (when I had both here).

CK, not an iota's worth of chattering. BAM. It was spot on. Same holds true with the 1.4TCII mounted to the adapter. I'm sorting through SnapBridge to upload to computer, and I'll post a couple of those when I succeed. Thanks for your response,

anthony

Ambient light, distance to subject about 6-8'. Brief hunt to full focus maybe a 1.5" No chatter.
