Looking through old shots, reminiscing, and of course amazing myself at how fast the years keep moving by, I came across this shot of when my daughter was aged eight. She was briefly interested in, and learning, how to play the mandolin. I told her to look up, and grabbed this one when she did. That is now ten years ago, now. I'm certainly grateful that I used to keep a camera handy.
This was probably shot with the D700 and either the 85 f 1.8 or the 50 f 1.4. I'll have to find the original raw file and maybe re-process this - one of these days. But I've been saying that for years, of course.
This is really nice, a keepsake for sure. But in terms of the image itself, this is where the shallow depth of field works against you. You know she's playing the mandolin, but as a viewer I have no clue what it is.
That comment doesn't take a way from the image and emotional impact it has for you. It really is a lovely moment with her turning to look at you. If this was a picture of my girl, I'd treasure it forever.
