Figured Id start the ball rolling as I got my lens yesterday and went out this morning and ran a bunch of tests. I also threw the Loxia 25mm in for good measure as the gold standard on Big Bronco. Big Bronco is a mid range test at about 40 ft for this focal length. This will be followed by a center test and a Infinity test just for the resolution side of the house.
Im not getting into all the lens specs and stuff as if you dont know it by now than you've been under a rock so stay there.
Just FYI i am on tripod here 2 second delay on electronic shutter with the A7RIII. I am focused only on one spot and that is upper center. This Sony has some surprises as its very flat field and very little distortion . Which is where we will start

Sony looks to have a very slight Pin cushion distortion which is a easy fix and really may not even need a lens profile.
Also I am correcting the vignette and exposure here so everything is on the same level for easier viewing. This is a IQ test so we need to see everything the same for now
Please READ the EXIF data or my instructions carefully

As you can see even at 1.4 its really quite good in the corners. So tells me two things here I have a nice even copy of the lens and the field Curvature is very small or is none. There is a little noise because of the vignette correction

Just for the record. Ive been shooting this wall for years with just about every lens out there and i NEVER seen a 1.4 lens act this good already in the apertures. NEVER at 1.4 this good
Now hold on to your jet packs you not going to believe this next one

Looks like mine at f1.4, where it seems to be optimized for - it performs excellent at open apertures.
Looking at the f2.4 comparison the higher contrast of the Loxia is readily apparent to me in the red slat boards along the roof, "Western Home Furnishings" sign (lettering and the rope below the letters), and the Big Bronco star.

It does look like the Sony may have more saturated colors. I haven't done a direct comparison with my Loxia 21 (poor weather), but I have noticed the same bold colors from my lens.

Paul I am fooling around with exposure just trying to get things even but Id like to see the Loxia and Sony Color stuff too. So try to judge here just IQ
Let me get to F8 where there is nothing going on and post full frame of that

So to save time the Sony is perfect at F4 which is amazing but Im loading both the Loxia 25 and Sony Raws now so folks can look at this on there own. I have a project to get on so I need to move along here.

I got my Sony 24mm 1.4 GM yesterday and shot my wall of books last night, in comparison against my Canon 24mm 1.4L II, which I like very much and favor over the Batis 25mm. Similar to Guy's experience, my Sony 24mm was very sharp wide open at center, with better, richer colors and better contrast than the Canon 24 1.4L II. The edges on the Sony were also very good wide open, much better than the Canon, with the corners still having a lot of definition, significantly better than the Canon, but losing color to vignetting.
It seems like an outstanding lens, and as I wrote in another thread, it is very small and light. It feels and handles in a way that reminds me of a smaller Sony 12-24mm f/4 zoom. That zoom is an amazing lens, and the Sony 24mm looks to be special in similar ways.

Looks pretty even in the center, the Loxia might have the slight edge in the corners. About what I expected. It's encouraging to see just how sharp the GM is in the center wide open.
