p.1 #1 · Beach Baby

Just got back from the beach with our almost-one year old. Any feedback greatly appreciated! Glad to have found these forums as I try to improve!

Nice series and looks like you're got a photogenic captive model for the next few years! A couple of minor things you might want to correct in post. It appears that # 2 could use a bit more contrast. Look at how the hair is bleached out compared to #1. It also appears that #4 is over exposed a bit and you might consider reducing the amount of negative space. Try cropping down from the upper right corner some and see if you like it better.

I'd also shoot wider, get more of the environment in the shot. In No. 2, you're cutting his feet off unnecessarily. Really good stuff, and I like your B&W processing.

#1: I think it would have been better to have mom's head on the photo and not cut in half.
#2: Nice shot but bad crop. Why would you cut the feet off?
#3: nice shot but again, crop not so much. don't cut right through the head.
#4: extremely over exposed & crop - you like cutting heads don't you?

Your processing is interesting. I don't know yet if I like it. I assume you wanted to have that kind of look & noise?

Thanks everyone for the constructive feedback. I'm going to make a concerted effort in framing wider in the future as that seems to be a common criticism. Some of the blame for that I'll lay on the fact that I only had a 50mm prime with me on a crop sensor, and my son allows a particular radius that I may go away from him before it turns into a different kind of photoshoot (see attached). With my acquisition of a D750 this week, that should help in the short term.

The b&w processing was a bit of a departure for me, personally, but for whatever reason felt right in post.

Attaching a not-BW'd image (besides the sobbing photo).
