Thanks, Rico. I think I knew that. I guess that I was getting sufficiently futzed-up by removing all of the now-defunct sites (about a dozen), that I didn't notice. Will fix above and for Lens$db (the next version).

MPB in the UK have been excellent for me (selling - I always tend to sell my modern lenses in the UK because I get a better price than over here in China). Prices fair for selling to a retailer and they inspect them properly (have refused 2 lenses from me for mould that I had no idea existed - certainly not visible to the naked eye - and they rechecked them at my insistence). So I'd be confident buying from them if those are the standards they are keeping.

I've currently got one camera and one lens with Ffordes (ex-England but now based in Scotland). Offering very good prices if on commission and 20% less for a straight off purchase. Choice is yours.

I would be very reluctant to buy a used lens off ebay, dp review. On the other hand several reputable dealers (Kemmore, Robert's) are on eBay and nowadays eBay runs 10-15% site wide discounts a couple of times a quarter, which is an excellent way of getting new gear on the cheap.

I will buy from an established FM member sight unseen, just based on their word that the lens is in good working order. Most of my current equipment was bought here - D800, 14-24, 70-200, 80-400, wonderpana filters, etc.

KEH prices are too high for my taste Sure, they rate conservatively but you end up paying almost new prices for used gear.. B&H used department is usually reasonable. So. Is mpb.

I've bought hundreds of used lenses on eBay, and only had one problem that was not quickly and easily resolved. Of course, I've passed on hundreds of 'opportunities' that were either too good to be true, or the seller didn't reply to my request for more info.

In this one problem case (unadvertised fungus), I followed the resolution dispute rules. After I returned the lens to the seller, he re-listed and re-sold it, but forgot to give me a refund. He probably did the same thing to the next user, and the next one, and so on... until eBay canned his sorry ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies. I eventually got a refund from eBay, after they probably sold his house or something (it was for about $50). This was before eBay and PayPal parted companies.

A retail dealer has to pay for the used lens, pay to inspect the lens, pay to have the lens in inventory, and still make a profit. Possibly safer buying from a dealer but it is always going to be more expensive than buying from a private party.

I use fredmiranda for 90% of my purchases of used cameras and lenses. I was burned by a private seller on eBay and have no interest in taking a chance with eBay again. There is no way to post a negative review of a seller on eBay and some people take advantage of that fact.

I'm going to weigh in on my experience with Igor's Camera Exchange.
I called Igor about a lens I was interested in. He didn't have any pictures on his site and told me he couldn't sell me the lens until after he sent me pictures. We discussed the price and I asked him to hold the lens for me. He said he'd send me pictures in a couple days or maybe on the weekend. I never heard from him and called him the next week. He told me the following week(ten days from then) was a holiday week(thanksgiving) and that's why there was a delay. Four days later(a week and a half after I initially tried to buy the lens) he emailed me pictures and told me the lens was now $200 more than the price listed on his website that we had agreed to. I asked him why the price had gone up and with no tact, politeness or even acknowledgement of what he had done, he simply told me there was a "new price." He then emailed me several more times in the course of a couple of hours repeatedly asking me if I wanted the lens. I'd rather pay more from ebay or craigslist. I wouldn't trust him to sell me a lens cap.

Re: Igor-I bought a Hasselblad lens from him this year.

It was advertised as CLA. Before buying it, I asked him who had done the CLA and when, and whether there was a warranty. He basically did not respond.

I decided to go ahead anyway, and the lens was packed well and has been fine. I just think he isn�t a seller who is that responsive in general, and I would just be aware of that going in.

Adding a shout-out for Robert�s Camera. They are a brick and mortar in the mid-west USA, they have a big store on eBay, and are a first class outfit. They are not on the very extensive list above, which is why I added this.

I have bought tons of gear from them over the years, including a Hasselblad lens in February. Due to the pandemic I had not really gotten out to use it. In late September I noticed that the aperture blades were sluggish to close. I had David Odess look at it and he declined to repair based on previous difficulty with such issues on Hasselblad lenses. He suggested sending it to Hasselblad, but I knew that if they would repair it, it was going to be expensive for a lens that isn�t rare.

I called Roberts, explained the situation, acknowledged that I was out of the 6 month warranty, and without any hesitation they issued a shipping tag and took the lens back refunding 100% of the price. Really a great company to go out of the way like that, so buy with confidence there. Most of what they have for sale is priced very fairly too.
