Honestly though, I think it's a bit irrelevant unless compared to the GM 24-70, can't remember if you Big Bronco'd that one? But the corners don't play with the good primes, they sharpen up better than the 24-70/4, so what's a better "alternative" than this lens? The trade offs of the GM are a flat no to me (weight and price). The 24/70/4 is probably the only other one I'd consider, and I think this better so...

This lens is a big reason I came back to e mount. It's a very good "good enough" lens. It is fairly cheaply built, the zoom ring stiffness is (for me) wildly overstated, and the IQ is quite good enough for anything but landscape printed large taken on a 42mp sensor. On my 24mp sensor, it's very good, but not great (much like the CZ24-70/4, but better in the corners at f/4.
This lens is an enigma to me. I was expecting it to be like the legendary 28-75/2.8, the first autofocusing f/2.8 standard zoom. And it isn't. It is much better wide open. But not as good stopped down. At f/4, the old lens was stellar. Very sharp, nearly corner to corner. The new model really needs to be stopped down to f/8 or 11 to do usable landscapes for moderate printing. The AF isn't quite what I would call near-silent. Its not noisy, but it is audible.
The size is amazing. Much better balanced than the CZ24-70/4. The drop to a 62mm filter from a 67mm is somehow significant.

Be curious to see what the firmware update adds to its abilities. I’m counting on at least no hunting in low light. I was going to get the Batis 25 but I have the Loxia 25 and investing that much in one focal length kind of bugged me so this is worth a try for event work.

Matt, What about the 24-105 G as an alternative? Taking the differences in focal length into consideration, of course.

F/4 isnt much interest to me, and don’t shoot 70-105 too much myself. Since they aren’t available yet other than waiting 2 months, and still cost 50% more and are larger it’s pretty uninteresting. If I were a hiking landscape photographer I’d be all over it though. Horses for courses.

Finally got mine today! Pre-ordered from Adorama.
It was strange how they sent the email on June 1st about my order still on back-order and cc won’t be charged until it’s shipped. Well, cc got charged that same day, charge was on pending for few days but didn’t get any email with tracking #. Contacted their CS via chat after few days and got tracking #.

You guys really want me to do Big Bronco??
Do you really want to know.
If your doing the big bronco I think a comparison with the 24-105 would be the most useful as most people are deciding between those two lenses in most instances.

Don’t have one handy unfortunately but I did that test awhile back. My opinion and my thoughts if you don’t need a 2.8 lens forgetting weight , bulk , price get the Sony 24-105 . Not much is going to beat that lens as a zoom it is very good even at all ranges. This Tammy is a cost effective way of getting a 2.8 and will be very competent and honestly we should have that expectation only. Not the best tool in the shed but a good one. For most folks it will be fine, especially fitted with a 24mpx sensor. I just been around this too long to have any higher expectations especially in a zoom.

Well I’m keeping mine, this lens for the price is brilliant, fair enough the Bokeh is a bit busy but I’m no huge user of wide open glass, thats why my primes are for!

Mine is coming a day early so this weekend I’ll run Big Broncotest. Heck we have to test it right. I’ll try and find my raws from the Sony 24-105 and I’ll upload both so folks can compare them. Even though different days and time of year on Big Bronco it’s a pretty standard test anyway for resolution . So maybe helpful

This may sound silly...has anyone checked coma in star/astro situations? I'm planning a milky way timelapse tomorrow night and am trying to decide whether I should also cart the tamron along to test out. It's 8 mi and 4k feet of elevation up a mountain, so I don't want to carry it if anyone has done the work already
