What body? AF-C or AF-S? What focal point selection. Last, does changing AF Priority help the situation? Be good to know all those variables in both P and Video mode... thanks.
Unfortunately with further testing it happens in all modes. Happens in both priority, flexible spot, and wide. On A7 III with original and updated firmware.
It's going back, a AF lens that I cannot trust is not worth it.
Tamron has made a gigantic mistake not catching this in testing. Whoever is in charge of quality control should be immediately fired.

Interestingly enough, my sour feelings for the 28-75 originate from my old Canon mount Tamron 28-75 that would focus to a different point each time focus was activated .

I hope they are aware of focus errors and not just the lock up issue. I haven't had any situation where the focus locked up, which has been reported, but in losing accuracy. I have had better success on AF priority, but it's still not as good as any of the other Sony lenses I have.
I hope a firmware update is very soon, as I only have 9 days left to return the lens.....
It specifically talks about AF problem (AF not working properly) when capturing video while focus is moving a lot.
I have still not seen the issue at all with my lens and A9 and I use the balanced AF settings. Haven't taken any videos though as I don't normally shoot video.

I'm glad Tamron has taken a proactive approach to this issue. A firmware fix would be extremely convenient rather than having to send it in. I think as soon as that's fixed and inventory is back at normal levels, I'll grab one.

I think they'll do their best to push out new firmware within a few days since the topic is getting so much attention already... I registered for their "Tamron Lens Life membership" and registered my lens on their site to get e-mail announcements on the topic as soon as they announce something new, though I don't need the firmware update so urgently since the issue hasn't been showing up for me. Anyway, will be nice to get e-mail notification when they announce something new about the topic.

So, I finally got truly out to shoot outside a bit for the first time since I switched the priority to AF, and the performance was dramatically improved from my first outing. No real issues at all, and, at least looking at the full size JPEGs on my phonex, they look quite good. Definitely good enough to keep. If I keep seeing this performance, I'll keep it and hope they update to allow for the other priority modes, but pleased with how it did today.

I have focus priority set to "AF" as default with all my lenses as I've learned I get more keepers.
Only when shooting action, I change this setting.

Since I'm clearly a ways down the list of outstanding pre-orders with B&H, I called my local shop today. They're expecting 4 with an unknown arrival date and I'm first on the list. Apparently Sony notoriety hasn't hit Nashville yet.
Intermittent issues aside, as a casual (newbie) shooter, I'm still really excited for this lens. You can't expect Cadillac quality at Yaris prices and the problems seem to be fixable via firmware or in editing. As one of the first native lenses of it's kind, you need to be willing to experience some bumps in the road. If you're not willing to update your phone on the day a new OS is released, you shouldn't be pre-ordering 1st gen products either.

After looking at my shots from earlier today on the computer, I can confirm that it was just night and day difference in focus accuracy compared to my first outing. One issue that was part of the larger front-focusing thing in that first outing was that the lens wouldn't actually focus to infinity, always stopping just short, and since there's a little field curvature, that would make it OK in the center, but terrible at the edges.
On this outing, it nailed all shots at infinity, and was very good everywhere else too.

Glad to hear Jordan. I’d generally found the same, ran a couple hundred shots through it today. Oddly, I did a bit of testing in Balanced and AF and didn’t see the errors I was seeing before either, so who knows. I’m happy with it, and focus lock up issues seem to be video related. Count me as a happy camper with a hopefully soon to be even better lens after a fix is released.

i was at durys around a year ago. didn't seem to have much sony stuff when i was there. they had lots of m/43 canon and nikon stuff. as well as fuji but i think they are a fuji resale so that makes sense.
ATM, i live far away from any nice camera stores . closest place would probably be Cleveland
i currently am just a hobby shooter. i own a 6500, a 18-105 f/4 and 85 f/1.8 i was planning on selling the 18-105 and buying this. (maybe even sell the 85) but atm idk. this really upsets me. i was looking forward to getting this lens.
guess ill have to wait for the firmware to come out. and even then. ill probably rent it from lens rentals before buying.
I was enormously excited about this lens, especially after the "GM performance" claims by Tamron. One thing I can say so far - Tamron didn't do themselves a favor with that. It is a budget competitor and it is a nice one.
For me, it does a fine job so far and it is a lens that I will actually carry around quite a lot due to its size.
I like: size, weight, price, center and midframe performance, close focus feature at both ends of the zoom range, AF
I don't like: build quality, flare performance, bokeh, vignetting, border performance at macro distance
It was about to be expected that the extreme specs will have a price. 28mm instead of the usual 24mm are one of them and easily acceptable for many applications. The other compromises have to be considered more carefully.
On the practical side of things, I enjoyed the lens and the results quite a lot. I have used this lens as a wedding guest and it performed very good in that scenario.
I am currently enjoying my holidays but I will try to provide a few updates on the review soon.
