Same here. AEL is Eye AF

It’s nice having them side by side

Btw, has anybody already gotten their hands on the rss L-bracket? I'm still not sure whether to go with a case or a L-bracket this time, but I've decided to add something to the camera to avoid it taking the same beating as my a7rii.

I put the a9 RRS bracket on the a7RIII and it fits great. I do not see any issues using the a9 RRS L bracket on the a7RIII. Perhpas over time, something will come up; however, battery access is fine, access to ports is about the same as a9, and seems to fit the body contour well.

Now if we could only confirm the noise levels between silent and mechanical shutter, specially in 14-bit cases. Would be pretty useful for timelapses etc. to shoot with electronic shutter to save thousands of mechanical shutter actuations per shoot. And there is also 2nd curtain acceleration that can potentially affect sharpness a tiny bit, specially if one is shooting continuous it can upset IBIS/OSS a tiny bit for next frame. We're in ultimate hair-splitting here, but why not get every advantage if it does not cost anything.

Yesterday, I tested AF tracking and got pretty much all sharp images while shooting my son riding his bike and running towards me. Better results than I could get with my A7R II. (Tracking is similar or even better than A6500)

What's nice is that I shot with Silent shutter, High FPS, compressed raw and continuous-mode which gave me 1/30s sensor scan time...so no noticeable skew with this type of motion.

I also shot with the new metering mode: "Highlight" + 2EV compensation and gave me automated ETTR for my images. All highlight detail was preserved and I got very clean shadows (even though precision was at 12-bits)

My camera was also set to tracking mode "4". Here are sample samples. Most sequences were about 15 images and they were mostly tack sharp. (never waited for the buffer)

What ever happened to running at a brick wall sequence? Those were the days.

Great shots Fred. Nevermind the A7R3, I'm reminded I want to pick up a Batis 135 at some point...

I'm mainly interested in:
- IBIS improvements with hand-held 300mm and 400mm lenses
- Workable DR of full electronic shutter
- Manual focusing with the new viewfinder
- Ability to use electronic shutter with high frequency lighting indoors

Tuesday is my day for mine to arrive (unless UPS is generous and delivers it early)

The Batis 135 is very sharp wide open and tracks very nicely. With the A7R III, there is the option to assign APS-C crop mode (1.5x) to a custom button so it's very easy to go from 135mm to 200mm on the fly!

Excellent, Jim Kasson is such a gift to photography (Sony especially) community.

The news from Jim are about as good as anyone can hope for. Single shot electronic shutter is about as good as anyone can hope for; perfect for timelapses, focus stacking whatnot and faster 1/30 readout compressed continuous is quite ok too, looks like about A9 level DR to me.

Thanks for those first impressions. The RRS bracket would be perfect, if it wasn't for this price tag and that weird battery door removal design.

Just came back from a day of casual shooting and I could not be more pleased. After spending the day before going through menus and setting it up, this thing worked like a charm. One of the highlights was the EVF, I was a bit worried about it before, but now all I can say is WOW.

Very happy I switched, jumping from APSC to Full sensor together with the amazing capabilities of this camera is going allow me to move past some of the issues I used to have with my Canons.

During my tests, I was very satisfied with the performance & small form factor of the Sony lenses I got, the 28 F2 and the 85 F1.8. I also tried some wildlife shooting with my Canon 400mm 5.6 L and the MC-11 adaptor. It did not have all the AF whistles as the Sony's but was able to track birds just fine, also the addition of sensor stabilization on my non-IS lens was surprising.

I still have to tweak some of the custom features and play with the video, but as of now, this is a winner in my book.

Great to hear on the APS-C assignable button. My A99ii had it, so I figured it was just a matter of time on the A7 line.

May I have a quick word from portrait shooters on the A7RIII and 85 GM?

New to Sony, as of last week. I only have the 50 1.4 Zony and the 28 f2.
I used the 50 today at a gig and it's a wonderful piece of glass.
28mm will be for travel and casual.

My main money maker lens on the nikon side is the 105mm.
However, if Nikon had made a 85mm 1.4E first, I would have that in a heartbeat, instead of the 105.
85mm is a fav, for outdoors.

I have read a lot about the 85mm GM 1.4. It seems to get excellent reviews.
if there are any complaints, it's usually: too big or too heavy or AF a bit sluggish
everyone usually compliments the bokeh and resolution.

A7RIII users, do you think the 85 GM has a little more pep on this new body? Or still a bit sluggish?
I'm not interested in using it for sport. Mainly portraits and weddings.
I do quite a bit of family portrait sessions, outdoors, most of which involve active toddlers.

I may give the 85 GM a go, just looking for a kick in the pants.

I have been doing a lot of reading. So I am familiar with the Sony 85 1.8 being great for the money. And the Batis being a good all-arounder.
But I'm addicted to 1.4. And I'm very much interested in the following criteria: look, stunning bokeh, good AF for those active toddlers.
Price is not a factor for me.

Thank you for any insight.

I tried the 85gm on the A7rIII today and it was superb in eye focus. The R2 was a bit sluggish and finicky but the R3 runs this lens beautifully.

Did a little portrait session today. The Eye AF is something else.

I've been using the camera for a bit the past two days and my favorite features are..

New EVF
New Eye AF
New Shutter button/buttones (especially the dial)
New battery is amazing, I haven't even changed or charged it yet.
The tracking is so good on this camera.
8-10 fps
The grip feels a lot better and thicker
My Menu is great.
Dual Card Slots
More Customization
Menus are much easier

Easily my favorite camera to date

Had a weird moment today wherein my a7RIII sat for a full minute writing each single image to the card. I reformatted the card and now hoping it was a fluke, as I've never had that happen with my RII or with this card. ¯_( ツ )_/¯

I did a couple of shoots on the 85GM and a7rIII this weekend. Really happy with the responsiveness of this set-up after having lived with the a7rII for a while. That said, the 85GM will always be on the slow side in terms of focusing. It's actually fine when needing to make small AF adjustments (posed portraits or AF tracking)....where things get slow is when it needs to make large focus adjustments...so if you're subject is really out of focus or you're switching between subjects that are at widely varying distances. It's just the reality of a lens that has a lot of big heavy elements in the design..same story with Canon's 85L.

That said, the bokeh on the 85 GM is really special. I've had the lens for about a year and a half now so the honey moon phase is long over...but I still am taken back by the bokeh this thing produces...particularly when dealing with typical nightmare OOF areas light foliage and hard specular highlights.

Ok, the III is doing good. Went out this afternoon leaving the III and the II on, which I normally do but not so much with the II due to battery use and the III used a couple of %. Fast and effective to use and no real problems going back and forth but the III is so fast. Definitely a step up. Sony did pretty good! Oh, the II used around 12 or 15% during the same time and basic use with a Canon 70-200 IS F4 on it and the Canon 24-70 II on the III.
