Mine back-focuses like a mother. Really not happy. It seemed fine for head and shoulder shots, but I did some full length body+ shots on a beach for spring break and it was back focusing by feet. That was on my 5DII that just came back from service not long ago. I've mainly shot it on my 1DXII where it works fine. Took my 5DII because it is good enough. I haven't shot the lens on that camera much. Ruined a bunch of pics. I think it is the 5DII.
I was having issues with my 24-105 focusing (it would just sit there). I wonder if that is related? Always got pretty good lock confirmation with the 85/1.4.
Yep, its the 5DII. I've only used the lens right before the trip and hand't downloaded the pics. No blow-ups on these.

The AF speed is as fast as my 135L, the AF accuracy is spot-on, the image is sharp, the background is blurry and the IS is fantastic for handholding down to 1/25th at f1.4 and my wife loved the photo of Squirt so I must keep the lens The local wedding photographer almost had a heart attack when I offered to shoot second with the 14L II and 85L IS.

Love this lens. It's great for video to boot. Using it on a 6D II which is sometimes a struggle with the DR, but managed to come away with some nice video and stills from a birthday party my daughter attended. These were shot around noon, edited with Mastin and film grain added.

My 1DsIII did not accept the 85L IS, the multi-controller stopped working and I was forced to remove the backup battery and reboot the system. Twice. I was forced to return it.

Fellas... I’m having inconsistent issues. The AF on this lens is kind of inconsistent. Within +/- 5 value... tried every possible setting, continuous, single, etc. All shots vary.
Anyone else having these issues?

Yes, I'm finding that the outer AF points yield not-great results on a 5DIV. I have a full suite of high end L-glass and this is the ONLY lens that has this issue. Canon shooter for 15 years so I know how AF works. Something is wonky with this Camera/lens combo.
When it hits, the image quality is stunning though.

Yeah, I can attest to this to some degree. I'm glad you brought this is, because it's been on my mind the last few times I've used it. Overall, I love the lens...The rendering and color are fantastic, and I've tested the sharpness and the centering and found both to be fine.
But, my copy definitely needs AFMA, else it will almost always backfocus in normal situations. My AFMA procedure only turns up a value of -3 to -5, but I've noticed that single-shot AF sometimes Completely blows the focus, and I have no idea why, even at infinity. I've never seen a lens do that.

Hmmm.... Strange. In some cases, when I use AF-Servo it will back focus.
However, when I switch to AF single shot, it is spot on... Weird. I have many weddings coming up and this is very risky...
