Allow me to blaspheme...I do like the Canon 85 1.2 and 1.4. However, IMO the Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art is a better lens. Faster focusing, sharper, 4 year warrant, overall feel...the Sigma wins.
The Canon 1.4L does have IS and weather sealing, but does that make it worth an extra $400

Canon has IS, which is invaluable for many situations, has weather sealing and most importantly out of the box perfect AF compatibility and performance. And costs ONLY 400 USD more. Compared to other Canon/Sigma counterparts, this should be a no brainer...

This is just a general commentary by Brian on the 85 1.4 IS. He purchases the lens he reviews and then does a more complete review. He is waiting for his retail 85mm f1.4L to ship to complete a more comprehensive review.

From my personal experience with both lenses, the Canon has a better focussing system than the Sigma. YMMV.

This video is a comparison against the old 85 f/1.2L.
I'm about as brand agnostic as they come with respect to lenses (I regularly shoot Canon, Zeiss, Sigma, and Tamron) and about 40% of the images I deliver to my wedding clients this year will have been taken with the 85 Art. Before this season I shot with the 85L for several years. The S85A is an optically amazing lens, period. But it's not perfect. The 86mm filters are annoying, it's laughably heavy for an 85mm, it's front heavy, the hood is also enormous, the rendering is IMO not as good as the old 85L, and the AF really isn't fast and it doesn't track moving subjects particularly well (just feels that way compared to the old 85L).
I won't know for certain until testing the new 85L out in the field for 2 weddings next weekend. However, I will be extremely surprised if the new 85L doesn't overall produce more keepers.
At f/1.4 I don't doubt the S85A will be optically "better". However, by f/1.8 where I usually live, I'm expecting the differences to be so small that I no longer care. On top of that the new 85L will have IS, almost certainly faster first-party AF, balance better, be noticeably lighter when carried for 12 hours at a time. Those things combined will more than likely make it a better overall package IMO.
If you shoot at f/1.4 on a tripod all day the S85A will still likely be better. For the rest of us, I think the new 85L is going to produce the best overall package.

In today's world of IS, the lack of IS / OS in the Sigma may be a significant point for many. In part, for what it can do for you in lower light. In part, some of us have let our excellent technique slip down to good technique + IS dependency.
When I demo'd the Siggy, I found myself wishing it had the OS.

I have had the canon for a few years. My brother bought the sigma, and I have shot both on a7rII and canon 5d3.
The sigma is faster focusing, very sharp (though I am very happy with canon sharpness) and has far less purple fringing. Its a best however, much bigger, and a bit heavier, and not as well balanced. I also find the colors of canon better, and its general character. And I hate these nebulous terms like Drawing charecteristics, etc, but the sigma is just a bit Clinical for portrait shoots.

Why is the Canon worth more? Because it’s much smaller and lighter, focuses more accurately, has IS, balances nicer, has weather sealing (no Art lenses do). I thinks that’s a reasonably small cost difference for an L. Honestly I couldn’t see any reason to upgrade my already very good Sigma 85 f/1.4 EX to the ART, given how much smaller and lighter it is. It’s not as sharp wide open, but it’s still sharp and by f/1.6 is getting very sharp and only cost $599US brand new. I will probably update to the L but I’m in no rush.

Well, they have ass-gaskets for some mount protection, and that's certainly better than nothing, but I'm not sure they're say up to Tamron SP-levels let alone a Canon L/Nikon gold-ring/Sony GM lens.
Wouldn't stop me from buying one, though. I'm sure the lenses can handle say a light misting, and as an unpaid amateur I'll just put my toys away if it gets any worse than that .

EDIT: Apparently it hasn't, even though there was a teardown of the Cine 85mm lens posted, and that thing was weather sealed.

While I am really anticipating this lens (not to buy, just to see what's possible) and the TSE macro line up, I do wish they would not try and outdo each other to make the heaviest possible lens. Could never carry, nor shoot well, a beast like the Sigma 85mm.
