It was a strange decision by Sony. There's no technical reason to disallow use of the electronic shutter with flash. They allow it on their other bodies like the RX10 II and III. They only need to cap the sync rate to the sensor readout rate.
Really didn't realized Rx10 II has a e-shutter mode! gotta find where the setting is! Got a RX10 at home , but it's not mine and only used very occasionally .
What's the benefits of e shutter in RX 10? Leaf shutter itself is near silent anyway. Unless I do timelapse and worry about wearing out the shutter quickly...I don't see why I should use e-shutter.

For flash there really isn't a benefit to the electronic shutter on the RX10, other than not having to switch back and forth between the leaf shutter when wanting to use flash. Btw the x-sync speed on the electronic shutter is 1/100.
Amazing camera and perfect feature when you're in a situation where shutter noise can be a problem. Just keep in mind that when using silent mode, some fast moving objects might be distorted. Most of you are probably aware.

That's one of the big things that the Sony A9 brings to the table - very fast electronic shutter so that it does not suffer nearly as much from rolling shutter or the curvature of fast moving subjects that the D850 is subject to.

Ah, so thats why the Jays suck this year - their bats are warped!
Those bats work really well when the pitcher is throwing curve balls. But Toronto's opposition has been stealing their bat signs and only throw them fast balls.
I guess I'd rather use a J5 (much faster e shutter, it seems) to get noisy, lower res and low dr photos than getting some high res, good DR, low noise D850 pic but with distorted human body.
Can we use DX crop to get significantly better readout speed ?
