This image was taken yesterday at the Pulama Pali on the Big Island of Hawaii. A few waves of surface flows making its way to the ocean due to the recent inflation. A difficult hike for some of them like this one and others are manageable. There is already one existing lava tube system currently going into the ocean still. There are two types of lava flows, Aʻa and the Pahoehoe. The Aʻa flow which is represented on the left is a crumbly brittle type of flow and very hard to walk on. The Pahoehoe flow representing on the right side is more smooth and for sure the way to go. I was lucky to get a active Pahoehoe lava flowing in-between this two types of lava rock.
I was on the Big Island last year. What a beautiful place. I was only able to see some active lava flows from a helicopter so didn't get any nice pictures like this. Great photo!
Very nice Tom! Mahalo nui loa for showing this. I've been to the island many times, and I've tried several times to get out and photograph the flows. Usually happens that schedule just doesn't allow, or the flows aren't happening. This image reminds me that I need to keep trying!
