p.2 #1 · Am I Crazy? XE2s instead of XT2

I woud get one of the bodies with the 24mp processor. They are much more responsive with autofocus, better high iso and ACROS!!!!

Maybe an XT-20 is your best best (or the rumored, upcoming XE-3). Personally, I probably won't buy another Fuji without the joystick for AF points, which means the XE-3 for me down the road (or another used XP2).

If your heart is set on a cheaper body, just get the plain old XE-2 used. Its the same camera as the XE 2 s and even cheaper. But IMO, those bodies are not worth it at the moment.

The X-E2 body is enough smaller that some of us have a very difficult time using it. Big hands and small body make for problems in handling. The X-pro bodies are just a bit larger and more comfortable for me.
If at all possible, handle one before buying.

Well, I tested the XE2s and liked it. From my experience, I ordered the XE3.

Here's a quick test. One image is from the XE2s, 18-55 JPEG. Another is from XE2s RAF processed in On1 Photo Raw. Another is from Canon 5D2, 24-70 CR2 developed in Camera RAW. Which is which?

p.2 #5 · Am I Crazy? XE2s instead of XT2

My first x-trans camera was the XE1, and I continued to use it for nearly four years before replacing it with the XPro2. The XE(1,2,3) bodies have a lot to offer, especially if you are fine about what they don't include.

Pluses: very small body size, low weight, the same sensor (and image quality) as any other x-trans cameras with the same sensors, interchangeable lenses.

Minuses: Fewer external controls, small body size (not everyone likes it!), less optimal EVF.

On balance, for many people, it can be ideal.

If I were getting one and working within your budget I would probably hold out for the new XE3, since it comes with the most recent 24MP sensor and almost certainly improves things like AF speed. If you like zooms, that 18-55 kits lens is actually quite capable — it is in a different class than the similar kit lenses from, say, Canon.

What about the XE2 and XE2s? They do use the older 16MP sensor. We could argue that one either direction. The 24MP sensor is "better" in several ways, but the 16MP sensors are quite good, too.* (I recently sold a 18" x 28" print made on the XE1 to a design firm, and it looked great — even though I had to crop it from the original frame.) Once you apply the firmware upgrade to the XE2 it is, for all intents and purposes, the XE2s — so you could consider a real budget approach of getting the XE2 and upgrading.

As to the ergonomics of the small XE3 (and similar) bodies, it is something of a mixed bag. When I first got my XE1 I was not happy with the interface. I found myself accidentally pushing buttons (especially the macro mode button) and accidentally moving the exposure compensation knob. But then I realized that it might be me as much as the camera, and a combination of adaptations made a big difference: I readjusted how I held the camera, I found that I could lock the macro button, and I learned to be more careful about the EC knob. (Though I still feel that the Fujifilm bodies make this a bit of an issue.)

Good luck.

* In another thread here I just posted a 300 dpi scan of a 5"x 7" section clipped out of a 20" x 30" print that came from the 16MP XE1. If you have a printer, download the file, size it to 5" x 7" and 300 resolution, and print it out on a sheet of letter size paper to see what you'd get at 20" x 30".

Yes, it was easy. The Fuji JPEG was Velvia. I should have set to standard. Pixel peeping indicates the Fuji can give the Canon a run for its money. I'm thinking the XE3 will be even closer. It's certainly close enough for me to feel comfortable using it to photograph our travels.

Of course, I'll withhold final judgment until I examine some 30x40 prints with a loupe. ;-).

The E3 is small but with the removal of the dpad, you have a nice clear patch to have your thumb rest without the worry of pressing buttons - or the faff of locking/unlocking the controls. Plus all the high specs, joystick, and even bluetooth (if that matters).

Fuji convert here who was sick of lugging or leaving behind all my Nikon gear when I was traveling. I got the XT2 and 18-55 as a vacation kit and was intending to keep the Nikon for my "serious stuff" - macro, landscapes etc. I would describe myself as a dedicated hobbyist who is still learning.

Get the XT2! I'm not much for technical specs so I can only speak to what I really love about it. The large EVF, tilting LCD, dual SD slots and joystick elevate it over the XT20 and the like, IMO. Since I've now switched 100% from Nikon I've been using the XT2 set up as RAW on one slot and JPEG on the other. Amazingly, I've hardly needed to touch the JPEGs in post and have only used the RAW files to test and experiment with in camera conversions so far. Nice to have them for a back-up if my SD card ever fails or if I want to see how a shot will look in Velvia or Acros simulation.

I love being free from my computer and spending most of my free time shooting instead of processing RAW files.

The tilting LCD is a real knee saver for me and great for getting the perfect angle even in awkward places. These knees just don't bend like they used to!

As far as not breaking the budget - get the body only and then get the lenses used. You may have to hunt around but they're out there. I've found that even the "cheap" Fuji glass is better than most of what I had with my Nikon (which was mid level zooms with a few primes). The 60mm macro has beautiful bokeh and I discovered the Fuji 50-230 OIS I is a hidden gem for daytime/outdoor shooting! Super sharp in good light and I got it used for under $200. I've even used it to shoot sports. The best part is that it fits in my jacket pocket and weighs practically nothing so I can carry it around all day without any bulk/weight issues.

All in all I think you can't go wrong with any of the newer models but since you've already shot the XT2 and didn't have any complaints, I'd spend the extra money and get what you really want.

Not crazy at all. I did just that. I kept my canon FF with and the ex2 compliments amazingly. I will probably wait another generation then stay with E series from Fuji. I use my Fuji 80% of the time, but use canon for work (I do interrior stone work, so for Anything I know I am going to be able to shoot, but Fuji is on hand in case I can shoot something unexpected) did a portrait shoot for friends of their new Dalmatian puppies, and random landscape or dedicated trip to shoot something specific.

The Fuji is an amazing camera to have on hand. I keep my kit in a mirror less mover 25, it is never in the way and incognito for snapping shots and walking around. I feel like you appreciate the Fuji more if you have dealt with ff slrs for a while and while and if I didn't love my canon lens kit (old version 14 2.8 sigma, 24Lii, art 50 and 135L) I would have ditched it. For me both systems get use and co exist very happily, but the key to that is the E series size. It is a joy, and renders great, it is like my Poor mans leica system, can't say enough how shooting with Fuji is just fun, and if I need wide and handheld ISO quality for a job, or I want to go early for a sunrise or portrait, the canon has a serious place, but it is admittedly now a "special" occasion system.

Anyway, point of the story is I really think the Fuji E series is like a godsend to anyone who wants to still keep their FF for whatever reasons. At this point though I won't buy anymore canon glass maybe ever, but the Fuji system Is what I will grow and play with lens swapping as it has become more like the canon ff compliments my Fuji system than vice versa.

I'm not sure if you've made your decision or not, but I'll give you a quick rundown of my experience as I've owned all three cameras you're looking into (X-E2, X-E2s, X-T2), and several lenses:

I started with a used X-E2s + 18-55 last spring. I got a great deal ($650) for a barely used kit, and it was everything I wished my X100 had been. I promptly got a Rokinon 12mm and was very satisfied with the whole setup. I also have a fair bit of Nikon Ais glass that I adapted for ~$20, and again, was very happy with the photos that camera produced. Next lens was a used Zeiss 32mm, which I really liked on the X-E2s (compact, very sharp, and more contrasty/saturated look than the Fuji 35/1.4). Then all the hype around the X-T2 started trickling into my mind, so when I found a grey market one for $1300 last October (back when they were still hard to come by), I couldn't help but jump. I barely touched my X-E2s after the X-T2, and wanted money for a 23/1.4 so I sold it...

About 4 months ago I decided to buy an X-E2 (effectively same as X-E2s with 4.01 firmware, as far as I can tell) for a smaller travel cam with the 27mm lens. Unfortunately I've been so spoiled by the snappier performance, larger viewfinder, dual cards (I shoot RAW to one, JPEG to the other which has made my workflow faster), better controls, and the tilt screen of the X-T2 that I just don't enjoy shooting with the X-E2 anymore, and almost always regret using it when I could use my X-T2 with very little weight/size penalty. I don't really find the X-T2 very cumbersome to travel with, and the size difference is fairly negligible.

I was really hoping the X-E3 could become my second cam, but I feel like it was a step in the wrong direction (mainly getting rid of the 4 function buttons I use on my D-Pad, and omitting the tilt screen which I have grown to love and use enough that I really notice not having it when going back to the X-E2). I haven't had an X-E3 in hand, so maybe the touch based Fn swipes will be okay, but I'm not sold yet.

All that being said, the X-E2 is a wonderful camera, and if I had to choose between X-T2 w/ the kit lens vs. X-E2 w/ kit lens and two fast primes, I would go with the X-E2 and better glass. The only reason I keep the kit zoom (which is excellent) is for video and the rare occasions that I can't bring at least two lenses wherever I'm going and for whatever reason don't think the 23/1.4 alone will cut it. The 23 is on my camera at least 60% of the time, maybe more, and it is a wonderful lens, so that is typically my "walk out the door" lens.

If you get the X-E2, definitely do so used since you can get one for ~$300.

The other option that I actually think is the best option, is to buy an X-T20 + kit lens + fast fuji prime (16, 23, or 56mm) + the Rokinon. You could get all of those at or below the $2k mark if you're willing to buy used. It looks like the X-T20 w/ 18-55 is hovering just under $1k on eBay, and the fast primes I listed can usually be had for $500-800 depending on luck, condition, and which lens. The Rokinon can easily be found for <$250.

You can also find a Fuji 35/1.4 or Zeiss Touit32/1.8 for $3-400 which are also both great (though less "typical" focal length) portrait lenses. I have owned two Fuji 35/1.4s and the Zeiss... I still sometimes wish I had the Zeiss, though I ultimately went with the fuji for the extra 2/3 stop of light—it's a really hard choice between them since they both have beautiful but slightly different rendering characteristics. The second copy of my Fuji 35 was much better than the first, so just know that there is some sample variation (the one I have now has a much tighter aperture ring, but the photos seem comparable to my first copy).

Here are a few links to X-T20s for under 1K (though bidding could go up on the first link, the second is Buy It Now). I really think this is your best bet because you'll get most of the features of the X-T2 and better glass, which will have more impact on your images than any of the above bodies.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a detailed account of your experiences.

I've pre-ordered the XE3. Since I spent a week shooting with the X-T2 and XPro2, it was a hard decision, especially giving up the X-T2 viewfinder.

My wife started this when she fussed about me dragging my Canon 5D2 kit (20 pounds) on our last two trips to Europe. Since we are going to London and Paris in October (work trip for her, I only had to buy my airline ticket), I started looking at my options.

When I rented the Fuji's to take to the beach on vacation, I also took the Canon kit with me. I had the 5D2 and the X-T2 sitting side by side - the 24-70L was on the Canon and the kit zoom was on the Fuji. She remarked that there was not that much difference in size and she couldn't see any advantage of getting a new camera :-(. I have to admit her point was somewhat valid.

That's when I looked further at the X-E2s. She agreed it was smaller enough. I also photographed her only granddaughter and our cats with her favorite lens of all time - the 90mm Summicron. She remarked that outside of my M3, the photographs had that "Leica look" she loves. That warmed her up to the idea.

Now I'm close to your recommendation. I'll start with the X-E3, kit zoom and Rokinon. I'll add the 56mm in a few months.

She went to Tanzania last Spring and will return next year. This is also work related. I'm hoping to join her on this trip. I'm scheduled to go to Memphis, New York State, West Virginia, California, North Carolina and possibly Germany in the next six months for work. Also, as we approach retirement, we plan to do some traveling on our own. A smaller kit will be nice!
