Congratulations to Dave Dillemuth for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 7 votes - View Previous Winners
Hi All,
I just returned from a brief trip into the High Sierra backcountry. Summer landscape in the CA Sierra can be very challenging and tends to be feast or famine. Days of cloudless blue skies with harsh lighting punctuated by monsoonal flows that can bring dramatic skies. After several days of boring blue I experienced some wonderful clouds on my last evening. For this image I utilized a .75 GND and blended two exposures to mage the extreme dynamic range. Appreciate your comments/thoughts.
Thanks,
Dave

Wonderful image Dave, beautiful scene. The processing is very natural looking, and nicely done.
My only nitpick is that I wish there was a little more breathing room above the cloud at the top center of the image.
Out of curiosity, what is the red stain on the snow in several places in the center of the image?
Thanks for your comments, Ed. The red "stain" is a maroon colored algae that grows in the snow. Not sure about other mountain ranges but commonly seen in the Sierra.

This one is really super cool. I just got back from backpacking up at Ice Lakes in the San Juans in Colorado, so I can relate to this shot very much. Nothing like that thin air and the rich colors one can get that high up.

Fabulous image Dave. This pic epitomizes the unique feeling that one gets from hiking that far in (and up). Really nice work.
Thanks very much, Jeffery. I know, you know the Eastern Sierra drill.

Beautiful image and a very good merge.
Thank you, Ben. I've been using the auto HDR merge function in Lightroom and find it works great. Gives you total control and easily avoid that HDR look.

Really like this. The interplay of warm - to cool - to warm simply works. Well done.
