Had a late afternoon buildup over Paulina Peak today, which gave us threatening skies. Time to head to Sparks Lake and maybe, just maybe, the setting sun will splash those clouds with color underneath. Yes it did!
Dave
These are fantastic. Gotta love it when it all comes together! Between the two - I really like #1 simply for how the rocks help frame the bottom of the image. Well done.
Beautiful images, Dave! I'll go against the tide and pick image 2 as my favorite. I like the simplicity and symmetry of that image. Also, the very small section of open sky in image 2 is not blown. But both are beautiful images!

Thanks Jim. I'm learning more and more that landscape photographers have to be weather men!

great shots! i have always been skunked there
Dustin - you should note this is my first posting of Sparks Lake. Even 10 minutes before this capture it was only a b/w opportunity. Nice - but gray - clouds!

Todd
Thanks Todd! And yes! Such a great feeling when the sky explodes in color - and you have a tripod mounted camera and comp!

WOW! Crazy color in that one, looks great. #1 for me, the bright white area of #2 is a bit distracting and seems out of place.
Thanks Travis. I was hoping that area would close up but it didn't. Whichever one I print will have that area closely worked. This was a single exposure posting but I do have the brackets!

Great images both of them with the nod to #1,
Thanks Ben! I do prefer the light on rocks in #1.

Dave,
Very nice !
I like #1, to me its a more pleasing comp with the rocks.

Dean
Thanks Dean! The rocks definitely help frame this.

Thanks Keith. I am really looking hard at #2 as well. It's a less cluttered pic.

gorgeous colors and foreground
Thanks Mike - glad you like it! For me the seaweed was a key aspect of the foreground.
Spectacular light you caught Dave. I recently moved to Bend and the last two nights have had some stunning sunsets, this being one of them - you caught it right!

Awesome colors and comp, great area knowledge too. Knowing where to be when the skies look angry really paid off.
Thanks! I'm learning more and more just how important it is to analyze the weather report!

What a crazy sky. The processing in 2 is way off. Hopefully that can be fixed. 1 looks pretty sweet
I agree. What I posted was a quick process and I did not see that until it was too late - and I'm not completely happy with what I posted in #1 either. Normally I balance color off something neutral, preferably white (not a setting of white point). However, when everything is under the influence of the glow I'm finding that method tricky. I definitely need to broaden my color management solutions!

Crazy color at Sparks! Congratulations Dave! Crazy color shows like this are not easy to process IMO!
Thanks Mark - and thanks for being so diplomatic on my quick processing.

Welcome to Bend. . . such a great place! I really debated about last night. Saw the low that had formed over Paulina Pk and guessed wrong that the cloud cover was maybe too broad! Around 8:20 I was really regretting that decision! I live just outside Sunriver and we do not have the Cascade view that you guys in Bend have.
