p.1 #1 · Senior Portrait Program Success Story

I've really been shooting professionally only since around 2008. In the beginning, I shot a lot of dance and then anything that came from that: senior sessions, families, whatever. It was a side job for a while. About four years ago, we decided I would leave my career as a corporate executive in the for-profit secondary education industry. I was not very happy in that industry and taking a huge cut in pay to do that. My wife went from stay-at-home mom to her career as a high school counselor.

So four years ago, we decided to build our business on wedding photography. It went pretty well, but man, I was having more and more fun, and really coming up with some cool imagery, whenever I got to do seniors. Almost two years ago, we realized this old 1892 brick building had 12 foot ceilings and exposed brick for walls, 8-foot windows, and so we decided to open a studio. It opened April 2016. That was about the time that we realized we could make more money with portrait sessions, and my niche was really with seniors.

So we just decided to start an ambassador program where the seniors would pay us $275 and get two individual sessions, and three group sessions: one in downtown Chicago in August, one a fashion shoot in my studio in October, and then a green-screen shoot in my studio in February, this past year with an Ice Queen concept. I got with about 6 local boutiques who styled my ambassadors with clothing from their stores for the fashion shoot, and then the most popular prom dress store agreed to let my ambassadors use up to three dresses each for the shoot, walking out with dresses that cost $700 or more. These girls were stoked! But it was a challenge to get the 7 girls we ended up with for the year.

Four of them ended up getting hired to do magazine covers for the magazines I shoot for, and one of them got two different covers.

We raised our price to $475 this year and no one blinked. We ended up with 11 for this year, including our first guy. Caroline is one, she's featured in another post here on People.

So this morning as I wrapped up a viewing with a 15 year old boy interested in modeling, I mentioned he should do the ambassador program in 2020 when he would be a senior. The mom turns to me and says, "He's in." Kid says he wants to do it. And that's when it hit me that a number of people have already said they want to do it for 2019 and 2020, and we can't even remember who, and we only take four kids per school. I talk to the wife and we put out a notice on our FB and IG -- and bam. Phone is ringing, email is blowing up, FB messages are coming out from parents who say their girl is frantic that she can't get in. In fact, we weren't really ready for this and we ended up accepting too many people. Some of them, we tried to explain the program, and they didn't care, they just wanted to be sure they were in.

So as of today, I have one school totally booked for 2019 and 2020, a second school will be full probably within the next day or two. It turned, as my wife said, to be a pretty intense afternoon/evening trying to keep up with all these people scrambling for a program two years from now.

I just felt like sharing this. Probably three or four years ago, I shot maybe 8 senior portraits a year. There's still a LOT of room to grow, and to get better. I haven't even come close to hitting the peak of what we can do. But what a fun day!

Here's a few shots from my seniors program, since this is a board in which you're supposed to share images.

2. Fashion Shoot in October, walking on Main Street just outside my studio. They're all laughing because a car is coming up behind me and they're sure I"m going to get hit.

What a great story.

I particularly like pic 3 (maybe you wish to clone out or tone down the black inside hem). It is a very unorthodox pose which you do not see often but you made it work.

Wishing you higher success.

It seems like such an underwhelming statement, but at the same time, in my mind, it's quite thorough and complete - I'd like you to know that... THIS IS WELL-DESERVED, Ron!

Also, I feel like, as amazing as this all is, it would be nice to see some diversity in your ambassadors. Including a guy is a good start! Including other ethnicities would, IMO, REALLY benefit your presentations and I'm sure would also be beneficial to your other contacts (magazines, boutiques, etc.).

All the best,
Jonathan

Thanks, Jonathan! Diversity is more about location than anything. I do a lot of work with lots of different types of people, and I can't really control who joins the program. My Class of 2018 ambassadors does include an African-American and a guy! So there's that.

An amazing success story and as others have said well deserved. I'm interested to see your work with the guy. It appears you always connect with the young ladies and bring out their best.

Thanks, Marty. I'll post some pics of the guy soon. Think GQ and basketball.

By the way, since I put this out on Facebook and IG about the program filling up for 2019 and 2020, my 2018 class has completely filled and we have people signing up through 2024. I'm not even joking. We already have two people committed for my senior ambassador program for 2024. I'm totally cracking up over all this.

Now... just need to figure how much to raise my prices.

So about how much do you make off your average sale? we do a $300 deposit when they book. That helps pay for professional hair and make up which is about $150 the day of their session. Then we do a boutique shoot, followed up a month or two later by their senior shoot. Then we bring them in to see their photos and purchase products. They have to purchase $950 or more in products to get the high res digital files. Our overall sales are usually around $1500. We have some people just spend $950 to get a few products and digitals, had a few spend close to $3,000. Your work is good, i'm just hoping your making out well.

Ron, when I was doing Senior portraits I never thought of having the kids pay me to be a salesperson for me. Genius!

At one time we had the largest high school in the area under contract for Seniors. There were anywhere from 1,200 to 1,500 Seniors each year. A fair number of them, 300-400 would opt for either the deluxe or super deluxe sitting. We didn't offer a kickback to the school, but we gave them a camera, film and developing and printing for the yearbook. We also did extensive coverage of school events and school groups. Then Lifetouch came in and offered them 40% of the gross to get the contract, a figure that couldn't be matched.

I took to kidnapping. I combined a newspaper ad campaign (this was the '80's) with the Student Ambassador marketing scheme. Some schools wouldn't allow our photos in the yearbook. We happily paid for their sitting fee with the contract photographer after pointing out that usually the contract stated a basic sitting had to be free, especially at the inner city public schools.

It worked out great, there was far less work and better profit.

I like the incentives you are offering. Congrats on your successful campaign!

For you and others, you might want to work out a deal for at least makeup.

Back in the heyday of brick and mortar department stores, we worked out a deal with the cosmetic department of one of the biggest stores in town. They offered a free makeup session to our Seniors right before their photo shoot. I did this after observing how many girls used unflattering makeup and applied way too much. The cosmetic department knew how to do makeup for photography and would work with the girls so they made more appropriate choices. I'd always compliment the girls who took advantage of the offer. The store kept records and told me it really helped to drive sales.

We did work out a deal with the people who do the hair and make up. The person we use the most, she uses a spray gun, and what ever type she uses it works great on hot days, you don't see much sweat / hot spots. She gives us a discount because of all the business we get her. She also puts something in their hair with her hands before doing their hair for stray hairs and frizzy hair, to tone it down, especially with the humidity. We are in MD, right now it's in the 80's or 90's. 90% of our shoots are outdoors. If I could only figure out something for the bugs, lol. Gnats mostly.

LIfetouch started in the 1980s? Surprised they have been able to stay in biz all this time.

I didn't exactly invent this method of having ambassadors and giving them incentives to bring me senior portrait gigs. But it works out pretty well for both of us. The momentum has continued, which has been nice. It's the first time since I went full-time about four years ago that I feel so much optimism about my studio's growth. I've always felt good, but it was always teetering on the edge of success and failure. It feels like we've really turned a corner.

Thanks so much for your kind words, and I always like hearing about what it was like for you.

I don't have huge averages. I average around $800 for senior portraits, but I don't pay for MUA. I make more off the ambassadors, but obviously put considerably more time into it. I feel pretty good about where I am right now.

Ron, obviously you are not asking enough......you need to think about 50% to 100% more....you do great work. You have sacrificed a lot to get where you are today.....you should be compensated.....
