p.1 #1 · Rhodies and Sunsets in the Roan Highlands
Every year in early June the Rhododendron bloom in mass quantities on the tops of the balds and ridges in the Roan Highlands. It had been 3 years since I was able to make the trip up to what is becoming a very popular place for photographers. We arrived on Friday, and left on Monday. To get a good spot for sunset on top of Jane Bald, you needed to be there 3 hours early...and we made that trek twice. Sunday night rewarded us and did not disappoint...best sunset of the year for me, and one of the best I have ever seen, it lasted for over an hour, it made selecting an image to edit very difficult! I thought I would share a few from the trip.
#1: EPIC Roan-Sunset on Sunday night...it was just an explosion of color that wrapped as wide as the eye could see.
#2: Saturday Sunset from Roan High Bluff...this one was weird, the color was really delayed, with mixed clouds in the foreground, it made for an interesting scene.
#3: Mid day shot from Jane Bald on my way up to Grassy Ridge, shot with the CV 12.
#4: Vertical image of the sunset on Sunday, focusing more on the rocks that make the bald so interesting, and the color range in the sky.

Fantastic images Travis! You caught some sweet light. This place is on my bucket list. Hopefully I'll get up there and get some good light too.
Thanks Jim. We did get some good light on two nights of the trip...Friday night was not as interesting...but being there for a few days gave us more chances. I recommend making the trip if you can, its a great part of the country. It is getting a little busier than it used to be, but I don't mind, the bloom only lasts for a short time. Gotta enjoy it while you can. I want to do some more exploring up there at other times of the year too.

Really beautiful images, Travis. Your first image is my favorite, followed by the last. You got my vote on these great images. That first one is outstanding!

Wonderful images Travis.
I was up in the Grayson Highlands for a hike during the peak bloom a few weeks ago, but did not try any dedicated landscapes during the family trip. It is a wonderful scene.

Hi David,
I have a friend that was on this trip to Roan that ventures out to Grayson Highlands a lot...I need to go check that spot out too. Thanks for taking the time to check out the images and comment.
