Will you see the warping with baseball bats and hockey sticks?

You may, but keep in mind that baseball bats and hockey sticks actually do deflect quite a bit on impact, so somethings even a strobed shot of something like a hockey slapshot will show a curved stick, not because of an electronic shutter, but simply because it bends

A few more shots from today. Millsart is quite right with regards to some of the new shots that are possible simply not being good shots...the last shot in this list is an example...it's right at impact (well, probably about a half cm before impact), but it's not an engaging shot, really, since you can't see the golfer's face, and nothing is happening with the ball.

Still, I found that some of the other shots available by shooting through the whole swing can be pretty cool. For instance, I really like the shot of Ricky Fowler halfway through the downswing, with the club flexed and the determination and strength visible...it's not something you regularly get to see when shooting with other cameras, since you can't shoot before impact. Ultimately, the slight warping in very specific situations (which is similar to what I got with mechanical shutters) is pretty much a non-issue, and the banding on the ball is very easily dealt with. (The oval ball is simply a result of the shutter speed not freezing action...all cameras show this).

Enjoy!

Really really like the first shot of Ricky. Thats a shot that as a Pro on the circuit during a event can never ever shoot. He would get tossed right out or get a really dirty look from Ricky. Maybe the only way is with something really long. That bend in the shaft is Mr. Fowlers strength

Great take today

I agree, the first shot is fantastic.

Some great shots all around, from the round.... lol

I'm really impressed with the rendering of greens, as well as skin tones and it looks like the camera (and the photographer) did a good job with keeping the highlights from blowing out on a sunny day, which isn't always easy. Often you have to totally blow out a white cap or shirt if you want any detail on a shadowed face, but the camera seems to have a very usable dynamic range, and a rather gentle roll-off of the highlights

By the way, did you actually use the 20 fps setting much, Jordan ?

I've got a rx100 mk V, which does 24 fps, with AE and AF between frames, and while impressive, I find its really beyond the speed of actually being useful. Now a 24-70 equiv on a P&S verses on a 70-200 certainly are different matters, but I can't help but feel that in like 95% of shooting situations 20 fps is just going to result in so much extra editing.

Heck, even with a 9 fps Nikon when I was shooting things like a diving catch in a football game I'd often feel "why do I have so many pictures of this play", when I was sitting at my computer editing 1000+ pics from a game.

With 20 fps, even if your not 'machine gunning' constantly the image count has got to get so high. I mean, with just a touch of a shutter your getting probably 4+ shots ?

I know you were testing and shooting a bit differently than normal, but how many images did you come home with from the round ?

I know there is some disappointment that some lenses can only do 15 fps, but I can't say if I'd really even see setting the camera at that setting.

I shot at 20fps basically the whole day. 1400 images today. As you mentioned, even at that speed, there are big gap in the swing.

Thanks for sharing your impressions (and images) of the a9. As a Canon user ( 1dx and 1dx2 and long lenses), I'd like to know if there is a way to use the camera with a 300 2.8 IS II or 400 2.8 IS or even a 200-400 and get good AF and FPS. I'm not really interested in investing in a new set of lenses, but I do peak over the fence from time to time to see if the neighbor's grass is greener.

Personally, I like high FPS. It doesn't always mean I will crank out 20 to 40 images, but if I can cut down the time between frames by 1/2, it's a good thing. More times than I care to count an image has been ruined by another player running through the frame or a referee and I've thought to myself that split second earlier or later may have made the difference. Also, a little more resolution is almost always a good thing, and even with long glass, I find myself cropping, so the more pixels, the better. And while I love the big brick 1d cameras for ergonomics, there are times a smaller body (travel) would be useful.

Anyway, thanks again for sharing your time with the a9.

I've been trying to gather facts from over the web about adapting the bigger lenses. It seems a lot are using Sigma MC-11 adapter over the Metabones in the last 6 months. Even though the sigma doesn't officially support Canon lenses it seems it has been working for people better than Metabones??

One thing that is confirmed is adapted lenses only get 10FPS (even Sony A-mount with their own adaptor). Therefore you actually will take a hit from 1DX/2 in FPS.

I found this one video with Canon 600II and it doesn't look good for that big of a lens. However, a 300/2.8 could be much better but I have yet to see any tests.

If you go to his youtube page he has more impressive AF videos using Sigma lenses and very impressive Sony 100-400GM/2xTC.

Yeah, that Sony 100-400GM/2xTC performance caught my eye too. I'm not into bird photography, but if I were, I would look into that setup for sure. A 200-800mm zoom lens in effect would be a nice combo if it is sharp enough and focus tracking is good (as the YouTube video imply).

The Sony E-mount has certainly not been for birders, but the A9+Sony 100-400GM+2xTC could change that.
