I tracked down a link I had for the Nikon 300 f/2. I cost $29K in 1983 and weighed 16lb and was a special order only. Apparently Hollywood loved the lens so a fair few were made.

The Nikkor 300 f/2 was introduced in 1981, at which point they began to accept special orders for it. To place the lens price in perspective, the 1981 MSRP for Corvette (without any options) was about $15,600 US.
This lens (in FD guise) is discussed here: http://www.marcocavina.com/articoli_fotografici/Canon_FD_85_1,2_IF_e_300_1,8_L.pdf
It's a very similar design to the 200/1.8. Not surprising to see it in EF mount, as the 200/1.8 was first released in EF, then FD upon demand. It probably didn't go into production as the first elements are fluorite and the cost, even considering those who would be interested in it, would be astronomical

Yeah after I thought about it some I wondered if it might be based on the 200 1.8 design but scaled-up. Do we know which lens came first?
