p.9 #1 · Sigma 135mm f1.8 test shots

Good point. And the last time I looked, this was the Nikon Forum, not the Sigma Forum.

What I think gets on people's goat is when over the top superlatives are used and comments like, "Blows the x lens away", or, "Blows it into the weeds". Err, sorry, it is a rare day where one modern lens blows another away unless we are talking about some kit lens zoom against a prime costing 10 times as much and even then I think it is an over the top expression - most kit lenses these days aren't all that bad.

For me, I just want to get one thing straight, this 135 f1.8 Art Sigma looks the goods, a damned superb lens from what I have seen so far from the test reports and the sample images. Is it for me? No, as 135 is a little long or short for my normal use - general street/walkaround photography and birds/wildlife etc. Tentatively I would say, if you need a 135mm f1.8, arguably, it looks like it could be the best 135 AF lens ever made. However, lets just get a bit of reality back into the discussion and forget the over the top superlatives and over the top biases from both sides. Yes, the Sigma does measure very superbly, but this is just at one camera to subject distance from one (so far) test site. But, lets also remember, at Lenstip, the Sigma 85 f1.4 Art also measured ever so slightly better than the 105E, but over at Photozone the opposite is true, the 105E did a little better than the 85 f1.4 Art and Photozone stated for the 105E that "Excellent. Period. Never had anything like this in the lab before.". In fact, the performance of the 105 is remarkable in that it has the *same* resolution for the centre, the edges and corners!!! This is due to field curvature that the 105 has and the fact that Photozone refocuses the lens as you from centre out to the edge. Lenstip does not do this. Neither way of testing is right or wrong, just a different way of testing. Does it make the 105E a better lens than the 85 Art? Not necessarily, as the 105E may not be the right focal length for you or it may not have the "right look" to the results for you. It also means you have to take into account many sites and not rely on one site as your only source and then hold that as the be-all-and-end-all for any argument. It just ain't that simple. So, hold all your "my lens is sharper than your lens" p1ss1ing contests, please.

Now, the Sigma 135 f1.8 again measures slightly better than the 105 over at Lenstip, but will it still measure up that way at Photozone? Who knows? But does a few minor resolution points at either site mean all that much? It doesn't seem so when you compare the 105E to the Sigma 85 f1.4 Art and it probably won't with the 135 either, apart from the fact that they are all different focal lengths which is very relevant when it comes to usage.

All these modern high end lenses are all bloody amazing and we are really all jut splitting hairs as really we cannot definitively say which one is actually sharper or overall better than the other. There is a little bit of subjectiveness in all this as well when we consider bokeh, colour rendering and overall IQ etc.

Now, for all those that have the Sigma 135 f1.8, kudos, it seems to be a stunning lens - (yes, over the top superlative). Will it give great results? Yes, in the right hands.

You can never get a second chance on a first impression, that's how I look at all of this.
Once a Sigma, will always be a Sigma. Used to be crap, now they're good.

It's the same thing as comparing it to a Hyundai, they used to be the worst cars! Now they brought up their game big time, they make some awesome cars. However, it's STILL a Hyundai: a 💩 In my opinion

Evidently you have never have seen the movie Thor. That's what I was referencing to you can't left my hammer because you're unworthy, it was a joke... sorry I guess I should've pointed that out. No I actually do not think any of you are unworthy. Just like Elijah, I just play around and have fun. He will post a fat man laughing at you when you say something that he thinks it's weird, I come up with clever phrases from movies. There you go ... no harm no foul, that is just my personality I'm goofing off.
Elijah once told me, don't take things so seriously or personally,

Wow, reading your post calling people who don't like the Sigma 'unworthy' just because they have a different opinion, while scolding negative attitude as childish, is surprising to say the least.

It's a technical discussion thread of test shots. Of course you'll find different opinions, converging and diverging ones. It should always be civil, and if someone is not, block them. Majority (if not all) of members here are civil, and no one offended anyone personally until calling others 'unworthy' just because they don't like a certain lens.

No one owns a share in Nikon nor Sigma, so everyone should get over

I actually watched the movie but I didn't associate the reference with the movie, maybe due to the context of your comment. As a linguist, I feel bad that I didn't get it.

Anyway no harm done

It's not important for others to like the same thing I'm like, I just want to be around a group of people that like the same thing. I guess it's like having a new car or a motorcycle or bicycle, you tend to want to look for people that have the same thing/model so you have something in common and can share your experiences positively. That's what I'm looking for. However I am not finding it here like that, it seems that all of you favor the Nikon 105E instead. I have that lens also but it's not my favorite.

In that case you might have better luck in the alternative lens sub-forum rather than the Nikon specific forum.

I have checked. No one is talking about it over there. Plus it's not a very active form, there are hours and days between each post. It's too slow for me. And since I have a Nikon body and this is the Nikon forum, I feel pretty justified being here.

Personally I pay attention to out-of-focus smoothness in the transition zone, background and foreground when choosing a lens. Rarely a lens is perfect in all these areas. I also like to check how clean the specular highlights inner area is...Usually lenses with asphericals will be a little busy and depending on the light may show distracting 'onion ring' pattern.
If a lens is not well corrected for LoCA, we may see distracting outlining around the edges as well. With full frame and fast lenses, "cat-eye" mechanical vignetting is almost a sure thing but some lenses are worse than others....
So, for me, so many things contribute to great bokeh rendering and although it's measurable in many instances, it is still very subjective.

Background blur is a different thing and varies depending on distance, focal length and aperture. Comparing lenses with different focal lengths, apertures at different distances may not be ideal but it's fun to see. Thanks for the images posted here.
I'm considering getting this lens + Sigma MC-11 adapter for my Sony A7RII. It will be a little unbalanced but will have the benefit of getting in body image stabilization and EyeAF...btw, I just found out that Nikon also offers EyeAF as well! I have to confess, I'm spoiled by it.

Hey guys,

Looks like the subject of this thread was diverted to a camp war of what brand/lens is the best but I created it with the purpose of give some info to people interested in the new Sigma 135mm and compare the IQ of it with some lenses we use every day or lenses that can deliver similar results like the Nikon 105mm 1.4 and 200mm f2.

You can use this info or interpret it at your convenience according with your needs but this is not a competition to find out if Nikon lenses are better than Sigma or Sigma better than Nikon.

I am not married with any brand, I use my cameras and lenses as a tools to create art and capture beautiful images to my eye and the ones who enjoy it.

I you look at my profile you will notice that I am fortunate to have a large equipment and brands like Olympus, Canon and Nikon and those serve me well in different situations.

My Oly gear is a great option for my travels, bad weather and hiking adventures where Canon and Nikon are simple not an option.

In this specific case I found the Sigma 135mm and Nikon 105mm to deliver very similar results, provably the Sigma a little sharper, bokeh, contrast, CA/purple frigging very similar but the AF speed of the Sigma is far superior.

If somebody wants to contribute with the thread please be civil, respect others opinions and in some cases just to ignore the comments you think are disrespectful, at the end is your opinion what counts when you want to choose a lens for your work or pleasure.

Have a great day everyone.

I have seen the movie Thor multiple times and never associated the "unworthy" term with it. As an analogy or metaphor or attempt at humor, it is a massive stretch. Wayne's World, however.....

Well, I'm a little discouraged I can't find one to buy right now. Whoever owns the Circuit City name claims to have them on Ebay, but I don't know anything about them and their ads give off a whiff of fly-by-nightness, so I'm keeping my credit card in my wallet. And this is Passover and the two legitimate outlets that have them in stock are closed for Passover - Adorama and B&H. Have to wait a week, always painful when you have GAS.

Did you try National Camera Exchange? Yes, you have to pay tax, but at least you get to try the lens in store before buying. I am sure most of the stores have a copy. I buy all my new lenses from them now, rather than B&H.

Those that mention that the Bokeh looks to nervous on the Sigma 135mm, I really don't think your clients will notice and that they have never heard of the word bokeh. I apologize if my comment made you lose your cool like Sean Spicer, but I have to stand by my impressions. It is a free country after all. I don't have a dog in this fight, as I own neither the Nikon or Sigma 135. Just saying what I see.

The comments regarding the bokeh differences are well-founded. The bokeh on each and every Art prime is not up to par with its Nikon counterpart (or, as in this case, the closest Nikon for comparison purposes). However, as to sharpness etc, the converse is true, which for some, myself included, carries the day. What is disturbing to me, and quite a few others (as should be apparent from many of the responsive comments from those of us who have the lens and/or other Art lenses) is the global bashing of Sigma based (presumably) on the past and NOT on this particular lens. It reminds me of the old saw.."don't bother me with the facts, I've made up my mind based upon what it was many years ago...the present be damned". For the record, I have and like both the 105 and the 135; each of which is /will be used for distinct purposes, with some overlap, obviously.

I agree. Unless Nikon replaces the 200 in the next year the 135 will probably be my next purchase but not for a year or so. I have the 105 right now and while I think I favor it a little over the 135, I still eventually will probably get the 135. I just prefer the bokeh and rendering a little more on the 105. Doesn't mean the bokeh isn't really good on the 135...

I'm starting the think that the Tamron 2.8 VC would be a better purchase for my next lens than the Sigma 135 Art. Just because I could shoot at 200 and get that extra compression. Since i'm not as impressed with the rendering with the Sigma as I hoped I would be. I mean at 135 I think the Sigma would look at a little better, but at 200 I might like the Tamron better with the extra compression. They are about the same price...

Bottom line, it's a good time to be a photographer. Who would've thought Sigma and Tamron would produce such amazing glass that rivals and sometimes exceed Canikon offerings at a much more affordable price.

The new Tammy 70-200 2.8 G2 is next on my shopping list.

Part of this discussion concerns value. Sigma's lenses are cheaper than Nikon. For some people that is very important. I certainly can't argue with their opinion. Recently I considered both the Sigma 135 F1.8 and the Nikon 105 F1.4.

The Nikon already has a rave reputation-the Sigma appars on its way to the same. So if we can predicate that both lenses are both superbly sharp (if not entirely equal) then we can discuss the other factors that affect value.

Reliability, Stability, Longevity, Warrantee (5 instead of 2 years!) and Resale are arguably better for the Nikon lenses. Part of this is because Sigma, previously, made cheaper lenses with a poor reputation. They are now, hopefully, in the process of establishing a better reputation for reliability and longevity with their Art series (coupled with their lens dock).

Whether the extra $$$ charged by Nikon represent more value than the Sigma is an individual decision. I have shot SLRs since the '60s so I take the long view. I have a lot of camera's and lenses (some from the 60's, 70's) and don't enjoy tweaking them. Nikon Wilshire Service is nearby for me and my experience with them is good.

So I have the Nikon on order (and have paid up for an extended return period). If I am happy with the Nikon (for my specialized use) that will end it. Otherwise, I can wait to see how reputation of the Sigma ripens. I have no censure for those who are enthusiastic for the Sigma Lenses.

I really don't care that much about resell value or how many years it lasts. I just don't like the bokeh as much on the art lenses as I do the Nikon 58 or 105...
