Yes its mystifying.
I wonder if it's to do with wanting to be able to advertise high burst rates with CAF (especally on the 63/500 and on some future faster FF) Continuous focus with big bursts would be very hard to do with the aperture opening and closing between shots.
But if this is true, it's still no excuse. They could turn stopped down focus only in burst mode.

I had a bad felling I said it backwards yesterday. The Tech a Pro quote is correct than it's on the vertical. Getting old man . Lol

Glad to be able to help. I know that my AF focus accuracy improved when I started to deliberately choose verticals to focus on.
It's to a point where the AF system will be forced to switch to contrast detect points.
