p.1 #1 · Hawaii

We just spent the last week on vacation in Hawaii, and these guys were literally steps from our condo.
I spoke to them afterwards and showed them the pics on the back of the camera and they were very interested in getting copies of the pics I took. I told them I wasn't a Pro, and we agreed on a "trade" for locally grown Kona coffee, to be shipped back in exchange. Lol.
They also gave me permission to post pics on this site. They thought that sounded cool!

I'm not sure If this is the right forum, I don't ususually photograph people.
Please move if necessary.
My 1st time photographing this type of thing

C&C are welcome

Mark

Last shot is my favorite for several reasons. Feels like the best composed shot with the subject at the center of the photo and the wave. Also, the wave is the cleanest of all of the set with a little bit of a rainbow effect happening on the right side of the image. Nice shots!

Ron's right; you really nailed these. I gotta admit, my old 7D was a disaster in terms of nailing focus, and I never thought much of the 100-400 (snob that I am). But you really captured these extremely well, even with the teleconverter. Tack sharp, as the first crop shows. Personally, I like the pulled back versions best, as they show more context. especially the one with the GoPro guy in the wave face.

I'm curious about the exif data on these. The 7DII is an APS chip, so the crop factor is 1.5. So does your focal length data already take this into account, or should we consider your 500-ish mm focal length to be actually 750-ish? Just wondering... Either way, outstanding photos!

Where were you standing? the angle of these pics are awesome, it looks like you are also in the water.

Nicely done, even with a Canon

Canon's APS-C sensors are 1.6 crop.

The focal length data does not take that into effect, so the framing in that shot showing 504mm would require an 800mm lens on a full frame to showing the same framing.

But of course, an 800mm on a full frame would have a very different looking image as the depth of field would be quite different at the same aperture, despite the image being framed virtually identically.

Hope that helps,
Mark

Thanks everyone for the nice comments!
Lowside67 is exactly right re. the focal length, Thanks!
I was about 50 yards out the back of our rental condo, standing on Lava flows, on a piece of land, that forms a peninsula, putting me "like" i was in the water.
Hope that makes sense.
I also was shooting in the morning with the sun just coming over the mountains.

Thanks!
I was on shore for all the shots, on a peninsula of land.
