Learning about the illusion of scale in photography (probably not to this level of detail!)

Textures and how to best combine them for interest and how to make the textures show up in an image (lighting, angle).

Maybe something in the style of an old Hollywood photo - to make use of textures and how to light them, as those old images are full of satin, fur, tweed, brocade etc.

Textures in images can now be fur fabric, corrugated cardboard, crumpled paper, knitted items, feathers etc.

Chuck, if you feel able / its appropriate it would be interesting to get feed back at some point in the future from you on how your students respond to some of the tasks you set, maybe a general report, not invading their privacy?

Photojournalism / interaction with a subject:

Create an image that symbolises a community or charity project, or perhaps which highlights someone elses hobby or interest.

Shadows

Make use of shadows in an interesting way
Avoiding shadows you do not want (moving forward from backdrop, using some kind of fill light etc)

If possible have them in groups each find window space and tape 12x18 black card to it where light can come in from the top and the sides.

Then lay a second sheet of black card on a tabletop a few feet in front. The two pieces of card will be the studio space and they need to expose to get a solid black.

Now have them photograph the series of black objects they have brought from home on this mini studio space positioning each one to pick up the specular light as the only thing that will separate each object from the background.

The lesson being that images are made up of tone, shadow and specular light and that although not all three have to be present it is often the use of specular light that is ignored but once seen and understood can be manipulated to add to a normally exposed image or to create cool images by under exposing as well.

Every six weeks I divide my class into teams, and we have a shootout where they must create a compelling image around a word or phrase within 2 minutes. These shootouts are so energizing to the students. They see how to quickly apply what they've learned so far, and impress themselves (and me) with how far they've come. The competitive/teamwork aspect serves the whole class well. We usually work 5 shootouts plus analysis-and-review into a class period. It's our game day.
