Access to the lava fields is managed by the NPS. There are rules in place for your safety. There is much to learn and consequences if at all getting caught by the rangers or by mother nature. Its hard to explain just by messaging here. You can contact us at [email protected]. Best I can do.
As for the focal length....shooting lava is dynamic. We use it all and still is one of the hardest subjects to shoot.

I know for a fact that my image is dark. I need to calibrate my computer. I struggled trying to get the right exposure for web. I did take some images by cropping without the boats and at times the boats are not in the shot.
However I am very much appreciative of your advice and always take it to heart in trying to improve my photography.
