Fred (or anyone else who's interested) - Let me know if you'd like my MIDI2LR configuration file and label template to use as a starting point for the BCF2000.

I really like that it saves the analog settings image to image. I have not seen anything on the market that does that.
Was it easy to configure it?

Is this the software you used?

How did you make the labels?

Easy is relative. I'm pretty geeky, so it was no big deal.

There are two parts which are a bit fiddly -

1) setting the configuration of the MIDI controller so the push buttons are 'momentary' (i.e. only 'on' while being pushed); by default they are push to turn 'on' and then push again to turn 'off'. If you don't do this, you'll have to push each button twice to get it to trigger an action.

2) Then assigning the functions from the plug-in to the corresponding controls. There's a starter template provided with the MIDI2LR download, but I rearranged it a bit to suit my style.

Also, the Behringer has four buttons which let you choose from four sets (groups) of actions for the row of eight knobs at the top. I set mine up so the main set is various develop and crop controls, and the other three switch to editing the eight bands of Saturation, Hue and Luminance respectively. Actually harder to explain than to do.

Yes, that's the software.

For the labels I just made a simple excel file with all the items, printed them on sturdy paper, and stuck 'em on with a glue stick (I know, very high tech). Here's my template via Dropbox

Thanks for the tips Mike,
I will give it a try when I get some time.

Mike - I was born in Minneapolis and even though I never lived there beyond my first winter there, I still have a strong connection and lots of relatives in the state. I love your historic photos and the fact that you took them and still have them. Congratulations on all that. Well done.

Peter

Mike, if you copy and paste setting from one image to another (or a bunch), does the MIDI reflect the changes when checking all images?
Are there any glitches that you found when editing your files?

You can copy settings and paste them to another image. But it seems at the moment there's a bug that keeps that from working with multiple images selected (only the 'main' image of the selection gets the pasted settings.) Works fine when pasting to a single image. Sounds like the developer is working on trying to fix it. This could be worked around by using the LR keyboard shortcuts instead and assigning them to buttons, but that's not working correctly on Macs at the moment (works fine in Windows).

So, for now, when I want to paste settings to multiple images, I just use the keyboard.

Otherwise, no notable glitches encountered.

Sounds good Mike.
When you paste settings to multiple images using the keyboard (instead of MIDI), do the settings show up on the MIDI when selecting an affected image?

Also, on the bug you mentioned.: Did you try using LR in Library mode (Instead of Develop mode) when pasting the settings to multiple images using the MIDI?

sounds like a board and controls use to build panels for flight sim would work great one knob and two buttons would all that would be needed the two buttons one for previous slider one for the next and a knob that move the slkider from its current position so no need to sync sliders but i cant remember wan t the exact term for thaT control is.

I have to say that looks really impressive. Does it really speed up editing as much as it looks like it does?

A quick search indicates i can get one of those BCF2000 boards in Norway, so i might also try it out.

Ouch! Busy counting pennies here. Blows me way back to the soundboard from my blues bar-band days. Could be really slick. I'm confused as to how one associates analog input to precise digital action. Sure keyboards and mice do it, but this is a whole other level.

Can this be hacked to work with Ps? That’s where I could really use it. Also, I'm wondering just how much more useful it is over a good trackpad. I've got a Wacom set up well, though I'd love more buttons to assign. In really working an image the brush/pencil action is much more natural. (Off subject, but how many of you still have that dent on your second finger just back from the thumb rubbed in there by years of pencil and pen?)

Those of you who build one, please keep us informed how it changes your experience.

Thanks,

Robert

Oh, for labels just get a Brother P-Touch from an office supply store. $30 and perfect stick-on labels.

Yes, any changes made to an image or images are reflected in the physical controls when you go to that image (in Develop mode).

No luck with Library mode pasting via MIDI. But the command keys work, of course.

I love being able to glance at the sliders to see what (if any) adjustments have been made to the image.

And I can make adjustments without having to focus on the adjustment controls on the screen. I just move the sliders and observe the results on the screen. No aiming for little targets with the mouse to make another adjustment.

Also, perhaps not obvious from what's been posted so far is that you can move multiple sliders simultaneously, and the software updates correctly. (assuming you've got the finger dexterity.)

Each encoder/controller on a MIDI device can send a signal between 0-127 - the MIDI2LR plug-in simply maps that range to the range of a given slider in Lightroom. For example, the Exposure control goes from -5 to + 5; if you set the MIDI slider to 0 you'd get -5 in Lightroom; if you set it to 127, you'd get +5. And so on.

I had looked at that, but as you say, not cheap. It looks cool, but to get a useful number of controls, you end up with something rather large/ungainly.

I have one, and it's definitely gorgeous and very high quality. I'm not sure it's actually any faster for me than just mouse and keyboard, but it sure makes me feel cool! And yes, I'd love to get a few more modules, but as mentioned before, it's pretty pricey.

Sexy, but I'd imagine other options are more practical.

Okay, the software interface is the key. With it you set each controls focus and parameters. Actually sound boards have had some of this built in for quite some time. (Focus of course on sound.) I note that there's Open source software for Lr. Is there a Ps project around?

Really sexy looking. In conjunction with a tablet it could us gearhead's the cat's meow. Wonder how much ease plus pinpoint control it would provide?

I notice it is possible to use the somewhat cheaper X-touch mini. That only gives you 8 knobs rather than 8 knobs plus 8 sliders, but is certainly a cheaper way to try out the method.
