p.2 #1 · 1dx shutter life

I have a 1Dx that the shutter failed at 220k, the new shutter cost me $275 and I put 80k on the new shutter. The camera is in decent shape a 9 with no dents or scratches.

Asked $3000 Canadian, and people are worried about the shutter count. Shit it's a $6000 dollar camera, and the best I have ever used. I now have the 1Dx II which is so similar in image quality.

Buy the camera if the body is in good shape, and don't worry about the shutter count. The pro bodies last and last.

Think I will keep my 1Dx as a backup.

Shutters are like your heart it could give up in 5 seconds time or keep going for years more.
It's something for people to hang their hat on and that's about it.
I'd be FAR more interested in the general condition of the body as shutters fail and you will never know when.
The shutter count means nothing.
I'd much rather buy a well looked after body with 200K than a beaten one with 35K.

Just buy a 1DX, you most definitely will not regret it.

Um, more importantly how many Clix do you intend to put on it. I just sold my most used and oldest D4 with less than 35K clix on it. So if you are going to do less than 500 clix per week then it should outlast your need for it.

I sold mine with 165k and it's still working perfectly. A friend of mine is selling his with 785k. Only because he bought a 1dx MkII. He is so sure in his camera, that he's giving a warranty till the shutter hits 1,2 million. If it fails before that, he will cover the replacement charge

Don't worry about shutter life.

Don't mean to be a smarta** (well, maybe I am but your concept of "struggling college student" differes quite a bit from my mine. As I remember, it was a "ramen this week, or film?" Dark ages, I know.

The whole "rated at 400,000 actuations" is based on a weird statistical estimation known as the Poisson Distribution. Poisson's a rather odd name, but the guy was French so Anyway, this statistical tool is used to predict the probability of an event based upon a very small sample, for example: how many clicks will the entire production of 1Dx last based on actually testing say two. (Obviously a very tired robot somewhere So it's a kind of SWAG (scientific wild a** guess), though the mathematics behind it stands up. (Truly wish Canon would keep a database of shutter and other common failures. They probably have the data as I sure they do most of the repairs. Access to it by the public would be real nice, but )

As many have noted, no one can guess what will actually happen. Infant mortallity is extremely rare with top end Canon gear. I remember we used to have a guy around here (Hammy - where are you?), who shot the International Cheer festival in Florida each year. 1,000s of participations, 10 of 1000s clicks and near real time availability of images to buyers, etc. He regularly replaced his shutters at 400,000 clicks as a "preventive" measure. I think he was using 1DIVs. I know I'm putting 60K a year on mine for I guess it's a bit over two years as a sports reporter, hunter of rapidly moving animals + everything else. Really, the last thing I worry about is shutter death. (Bought my first "real" camera - 1DIIn - with ≈ 140k on it. Ran it hard for three years (have you ever seriously chased swallows?) before selling it here to move up to a 1DIII. I'm sure shutters quit, but …

Besides as others have said, chance of failure is related to intensity of use, wild chance, and who what elese - maybe the number of virgins sacrificed? Even if it does quit, make sure your CPS Platinum is current and send it in. Not particularly expensive.

Robert

(Probably more than you ever wanted to know, but then you did say you were a student

Remember this post of voodoo1694 from February, 2015?

FS: Canon EOS 1DX - High Mileage

Item 1: Canon 1DX

I have 3 very high-mileage but mint-condition Canon 1DX's. These were used strictly for timelapse and it did run the shutters up significantly. The cameras look brand new to me. No marks, blemishes, etc. Sensors are scratch-free (a couple might need a slight cleaning and/or air blow but perfectly fine as-is). There are currently 11 other cameras in-use and the batteries/chargers from these are being salvaged, so these will come with nothing other than the bodies themselves. No boxes, batteries, chargers, etc etc. Just the bodies. I have taken the missing accessories and high shutter counts into account with my pricing. Everything is 100% functional and working properly right now, however due to the high shutter counts I'm selling these As-Is.
$3299 per camera. They are all priced the same. Lowest actuation count to be sold first, and so on.

Pictures will come soon

1DX #1 - 769K
1DX #2 - 869k
1DX #3 - 1.1 million shots

Price: $3299.00
Payment method: PayPal
Item condition: 10

I've beaten shutter life odds and blew a shutter within 60 shots of a brand new shutter.

That's what we call "infant mortality." Hope you were under warranty as that's way off the chart (as in approaching -.0001%) Still, it sux. Hope you got good service from Canon.

Anyone that pays the price you are asking for, needs to have their head examined.

That's just my opinion.

I bought one for $2700 with 197k on it. The owner replaced the shutter at 190k. So I should be good to go for a while =D

Right, they don't have staff photographers anymore but they use the same ones for all of their assignments. I was talking about an editor there that shoots a lot for them. He shoots on his "on time" for SI.

Shutterbug,
"Anyone that pays the price you are asking for, needs to have their head examined."
Remember, this listing was a year ago when a 1DX was selling here for about $4,000.00. In fact, the person who purchased the body with 1.1 million shutter count, replaced the shutter and listed the body on the Buy/Sell board for $4,000.00. It sold....

Good grief. I mustn't have had my morning coffee. I didn't realize that was a post from a year ago.

That was a good price at the time.
