Funny how the internet works. A certain blowhard declares the lens "flat" before it is even released, and his posse of sycophants are out "spreading the gospel". The rumor then gets repeated by reasonable people who don't realize where it came from.
True. This lens produces spectacular images and some of the best depth of rendering, from what I see on this thread. And I personally love the swirly bokeh that is criticized by some. The tone of "discussion" on the DPR Nikon Lens Forum is unacceptable, I'm glad that we haven't reached the same low here.
Keep on posting the beautiful images guys, I love to see your great work!

Yup I agree, to kept looking at my comparison, the 58, 85, and 105, I cant see how the 105 1.4E is any flatter ? The 105 1.4E, is bought for its bokeh and subject to background separation, and ill admit, I'm a Shallow DOF addict haha, love the blurred backgrounds
No idea who this guy is, but holy hell he is the epitome of insufferable. You'd learn more about photography watching reruns of Bob Ross painting than watching his countless videos.
Now, post more photos, convince me to sell my 85G for this thing.

Rent the sucker from lens rentals. That's what convinced me. I had preordered it and then refused at the door because Nikon failed to give this lens to good shooters for the initial sample images.
The only problem with this lens is I am now engineering essentially my entire kit around it.
I was shooting 135 dc, sigma 85, 50, 35, 24.
Now I think after friday I'll be down to 105, 58 and 28 the same as a couple other shooters here.
To me the 105 doesn't pair that well with 85 or 50. The 58 pairs better with it, almost perfect. Almost.
Why is everyone getting rid of lenses to accommodate the 105. Today in the studio it was too long for a mother and newborn photousing natural light. So out came the 85. I think they all have their uses.
But people like myself ditching lenses are not typically in studios and our gear needs to be versatile and mobile. The 58 does most of the duty that the 85 does and what it doesn't the 105 does even better. And when you are in field choosing an appropriate lens less is sometimes more.

I love your processing. Bravo!
You rarely hear me say this on here
Subtle, clean, natural, not overdone. An image that will never get old!
Love the subject isolation on that boat... this is usually tough to do on big objects but the 105E managed. I appreciate you posting BIG images, Lance. It's crazy how we're in 2016 and websites still limit photo sizes. Equipment such as the D810 and 105 1.4E just beg for HUGE prints / displays.
This lens isn't light. no VR, at 105mm, you better have good technique or not drink coffee.
Normally use my D810. I have produced (probably) the best images with this lens (since switching to Nikon 14 months ago).
But I'm finding very good results from the 105e with my D500
I don't know if it's b/c there is possibly less lag with this body?
Improved AF?
