Thanks for the cool comments.
I use to own the 200/2 lens and always wanted to re-acquire one.
The 105e has somewhat eliminated that temptation.
And now for something different.
Waterslide photo with D810 wide open at 1/6400sec, iso64.
Edit: added a second photo at 1/8000sec, iso 64.
A fun experiment - comparison between the 105 1.4E, 105 2.5 AI and 135 f/2 AIS. The 2 vintage Nikkors quickly showed their age as the 105 1.4E (with its modern Nano coating) managed to eliminate all flares. The 135/2 AIS was the worst as far as flare is concerned. I am actually surprised as the 105 2.5 AI held its own with the nice rendering. The 105 1.4E had more of the blur, but the 2.5 is not too far behind.

Wow, the 105 2.5 AI looks about as good in these shots, and is so much cheaper.

Not to take anything away from the 105mm 2.5 but you are losing nearly 2 stops of depth of field which is easily noticeable in the photos Joseph took. If you want to be able to lose the background, those 2 stops are needed for this focal length. There is less of a difference between the 70-200mm F2.8 vs 200mm F2 than between the 105mm F2.5 & the 105mm F1.4.

MF Nikkorz rule! That said, of course Corey's right about the DOF argument, and then there's the AF one, too. Impressive performance of the old lens, though. Thanks for posting, very interesting!
Someone at DPR took some side-by-side bokeh comparison of 58 1.4G, 105 1.4E, 200 f/2, 70-200 2.8, and 180 2.8. On one of the shots, I thought it was from the Chub - but I was surprised that the lens used was the Chubino.

I am shocked and kinda happy how the legendary 105 2.5 AI held its own. I was going to sell it after acquiring the Chubino, but for the very little money I'd get (about $100), I'll just keep it as a backup and it's actually a fun lens to use.

Ya, the old nikkor lenses are really good. I always snag a few of my dad's so I can shoot with them. Can't wait for the day when nikon finally releases a mirrorless with great split screen EVF for manual focusing. Dare to dream
Few more from yesterday. The first one has to be seen big to really see the amazing rendering and subject isolation.
I was able to see your photo on my iPhone 6s Plus and it looked great... I have the Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 and I can tell you the Nikon 105mm f/1.4 is just as sharp with similar CA characteristics. As for sharpness tests & bokeh tests, I haven't compared the two lenses side by side yet because the 105mm has been living on my D810 ever since I got it. Anyway, I'm headed to Palo Duro canyon and I'll get some shots for you with my 105 at f/5.6. If someone else beats me too it, I may still post them for you.
