I've been experimenting with AF and AF-C on my D810 and I have found the center focus point was less accurate than the focus point just left of center. Using either focus modes on that focus point left of center tends to work much better. However that focus point will not activate the AF illuminater light, but most of the time I don't need it anyway. Try using some of the focus point left or right of the center focus point. I'm not sure how this will differ on your D750, but I think it's worth finding out. I've preordered a D850 and tried one today, it's a sweet camera. Can't wait to get it.
Let me know if those other focus points make any difference on your keeper rate.

Ive shot many weddings with this lens already. When processional/recessional comes around, I'm getting a keeper rate of 50% or less...
Pretty depressing. I almost have a feeling it's a problem with the new E lenses.
I use center point, set to AF-C S and focus on a contrast point (say black tie and white shirt) and my 105E ends up backfocusing...
My 35mm f/1.4G and 58mm f/1.4G are spot on with a 95% keeper rate, even at f/1.4... GAAAAH...Show more →
My 105mm focus's great in AF-C with center point. (outer focus points another story on D800 - 850 is great) I do have some issues with AF-S but rarely use that mode. If you want great focusing I'd highly suggest the D850. Have only had the camera for 3 days but the AF is pretty damn amazing. Haven't needed to fine tune any of my lenses so far. It just nails the focus every time.
