Thank you Morris. Talking about ambient light is one of those things we can curse while looking out of our kitchen window, or we could get out and make the best of it.
I shot rednecks on some sun-less days too, and that really meant going after proximity shots like in the example below in order to get a half decent IQ....longer range shots are usually tougher.
Get any closer and you will be inside the bird Peter. Super close up.

What a beautiful set of Rednecks, Peter, of them all it's your first shot that is my fav, the feather detail and colours, the wonders of nature brought to FM by a master of the 800
Beautiful rednecks with ton of details, Peter. I love how all the feather from white, red and black showing vividly. That 800L is on my wish list and I don't know if I should get that 800 or 600L II. I do have 500L mark 1 and I really don't want to sell it cheap.
Oh, what a terrible disappointment. I was hoping for some mug shots of folks from Alberta - and found beautiful pijuns instead! On the weekend, God & time permitting, I may post some annotations about Canon 1Dx2.
This is why sometimes I visit his forum, especially after new camera release:
Quote from someone about the 1Dx2. “I have a vase in my family room that with just a table lamp on, the 1Dx could never acquire focus. The 1Dx2 nails focus on the vase without the slightest hesitation.“ end of quote.
Obviously, the 1Dx didn’t like the vase, but 1Dx2 does. Maybe it is an ugly piece of pottery? So, now the question is which camera has a better taste?

Thank you Morris, indeed, if I got any closer, the bird would have been on my plate garnished with a dollop of orange sauce. Ask Jefferson, he knows that culinary type of "proximity" to birds.

Jeffer, you keep company of some rednecks ? I have a hard time believing that.

Thanx much Tam. Knowing a bit what you like to shoot, I think 600 II would be a more suitable lens for you than the 800 which is not a very good BIF lens IMO. If you chose 600 II, then your 500 MkI would not see much use.

You are one perceptive man (woman ?) Lan11. That lamp story is so typical. Now, on this very forum very early upon the 1DX MkI release, there was one well regarded bird photographer who wrote that 1DX MkI focused on birds in flight against a busy background so accurately, as if the camera could read his mind.
We see things like that all the time which is a fairly normal expression of enthusiasm for a new toy.

You seem to attract rednecks ..............and that is a good thing in your case Peter
#4 is quite a lovely shot IMO and apparent sharpness seems more pronounced simply due to other areas that are OOF and it increases the perceived sharpness of the areas that are sharp But at first glance I had my mind made up it was my fav!
#3 has me slowed down to appreciate all of the little details and nuances of color, though it does look like the most sharpness is at the front of the eye and forward
Beautiful creatures well seen and well presented............they all are worthy

Thank you much, Karl, you are such a generous soul.

Very nice all 'round Peter. I really like the wide open yapper in #3...

Thank you Camster, I think the poor bird was yawning in that shot #3.
I see some cute little ducks but no pickup trucks, beer or guns. What gives?

Thank you Ed. Your shots are probably fine already, but I guess the 800 guarantees perfection. (Hmmm.... I wonder why I still take many crappy shots using the 800 ?
